During this continuing education event, Dr. Judi Moolten will cover the basics of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and how to incorporate EMDR into clinical practice. EMDR is a treatment tool for trauma that has been around for over 25 years. EMDR takes a multi-disciplinary approach utilizing several proven protocols to trauma treatment including psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, experiential, and body-centered therapies. EMDR stimulates both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously while the person in treatment focuses on external stimuli.
EMDR includes an 8-phase protocol, also known as an Adaptive Information Processing Model that provides a top-down approach to trauma treatment. The eight phases include identifying targets for treatment and preparing the person for the EMDR; stress-reduction and coping skills; processing trauma using EMDR procedures; closing an EMDR session; individual self-maintenance; and follow-up.
EMDR is effective in the treatment of posttraumatic stress, anxiety, abuse, and depression. EMDR can be used with single or multiple incidents of trauma and debriefing. It is most effective for people who have directly or indirectly experienced trauma that has a cognitive thread.
