Cancer treatment can impact the mental health of patients and family members to such a degree, it is imperative to separate what are "normal" reactions to the abnormal situation and what are more serious mental health concerns.
Throughout this 2-hour continuing education training, Clara Anderson Sainte, LCSW, LSCSW will help therapist participants to increase their knowledge regarding the impact of depression and anxiety in cancer patients, feel more confident discussing sensitive topics, as well as understand steps to ensure their own mental well-being while providing treatment.
This introductory level continuing education webinar is designed to help mental health practitioners:
Statement of accuracy, utility, and most common risks: This program presents research-informed clinical content focused on the diagnosis and assessment of depression and anxiety in cancer patients. Designed for mental health professionals, the training aims to deepen clinical understanding of these specific comorbidities and enhance the practitioner’s ability to support clients through medical crisis and recovery. This course provides a foundational yet thorough overview, requiring no prior specialized training in oncology care. The program emphasizes application of course concepts within professional scope of practice and promotes clinically responsible, culturally responsive, and ethical use of the strategies presented. While the research reviewed supports the clinical utility of these approaches when thoughtfully applied, the presenter acknowledges that depression and anxiety within cancer patients is highly individualized. Not all strategies are appropriate for every client, population, or context, and clinical judgment is essential to avoid pathologizing or oversimplifying diverse responses.
Declaration identifying any potential conflict of interest and/or commercial support: No conflict of interest indicated.
