Beyond Words: Identifying and Assessing Trauma in Voice and Body

Presented by Corey Petersen, PhD, LCMFT on 08-21-2026 at 9 a.m. Pacific (12 p.m. Eastern) to 12 p.m. Pacific (3 p.m. Eastern)

Therapists are trained to attend carefully to what clients say, yet trauma is often revealed just as powerfully in how something is said—or in what remains unspoken. Many survivors recount painful experiences with calm composure, humor, vagueness, or intellectual detachment, masking distress that may go unnoticed in traditional talk-centered approaches. When clinicians focus primarily on narrative content, subtle but clinically significant cues embedded in tone, pacing, silence, posture, and facial expression can be overlooked. As trauma research continues to highlight the role of the nervous system and embodied responses, effective assessment increasingly requires listening beyond words alone.

This advanced workshop examines the often-overlooked paralinguistic and nonverbal dimensions of trauma communication. Participants will learn to identify trauma-related patterns in vocal tone, rhythm, pauses, and speech disruptions, alongside bodily indicators such as gesture, posture, and micro-expressions. The training also considers the therapist’s own communicative presence—how voice, movement, and regulation can either heighten or soften a client’s sense of safety. Integrating communication science with trauma-informed clinical practice, this workshop offers a deeper lens for understanding trauma as it unfolds moment to moment in the therapy room

This advanced level continuing education webinar is designed to help mental health professionals:

  1. Identify verbal and nonverbal communication patterns commonly seen in trauma survivors, including paralinguistic markers.
  2. Analyze the role of humor and other coping strategies in trauma narratives.
  3. Assess the impact of the therapist’s affect on the processing of trauma narratives and therapeutic outcomes.

Declaration identifying any potential conflict of interest and/or commercial support: The presenter of this training has no relevant financial or commercial conflicts of interest to disclose. This training is designed solely for educational purposes and does not promote any specific therapeutic product, service, or organization. This training presents clinical and scientific information on dyadic coping in couples facing illness, drawing from empirical research. The material is intended for mental health professionals seeking to enhance their work with couples navigating medical and emotional challenges. While research supports the effectiveness of dyadic coping interventions in improving relationship quality and emotional well-being, outcomes may vary based on individual circumstances. Therapists should exercise clinical judgment in applying these concepts, as misinterpretation or misapplication could lead to unintended relational strain or emotional distress for clients.

Statement of accuracy, utility, and most common risks: This program presents clinically grounded, research-informed material on recognizing trauma through paralinguistic and nonverbal communication, drawing from established findings in trauma psychology, communication science, and embodied nervous system research. The workshop is designed for mental health professionals seeking to strengthen their ability to identify trauma indicators that may not emerge through verbal disclosure alone. No specialized prior training in trauma assessment beyond general clinical competence is required. The material is intended to enhance observational skill and clinical attunement, not to replace formal diagnostic assessment or individualized case formulation. While the approaches discussed are supported by emerging interdisciplinary research and are broadly applicable across client populations, inaccurate interpretation or overreliance on isolated vocal or bodily cues may lead to misattunement, overpathologizing, or incorrect clinical assumptions. As with all trauma-informed methods, these concepts should be applied thoughtfully, within scope of practice, and in conjunction with broader clinical judgment.
