Artificial Intelligence and the Practice of Psychology: Ethical and Clinical Considerations

Presented by Rochelle Perper, PhD on 09-16-2026 at 9 a.m. Pacific (12 p.m. Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are shaping both our daily lives and the way mental health care is delivered. As mental health practitioners, we are often intrigued by new advancements, yet understandably concerned about client privacy, data security, and ethical use. Additionally, the rapid pace of innovation can make it challenging to evaluate which tools are evidence-based, reliable, or appropriate for clinical practice.

This course provides an accessible and clinically grounded overview of the applications of AI in mental health care, with particular attention to the use of AI tools in clinical practice. Ethical and safety considerations will be examined throughout the presentation through the lens of APA Ethical Guidelines, with attention to informed consent, competence, risk management, and professional responsibility.

This course emphasizes ethical discernment and critical thinking, supporting mental health clinicians in making informed, value-aligned decisions about if and how AI tools may serve as a supportive adjunct to clinical practice. Designed for clinicians who want to stay informed without feeling overwhelmed, this training offers a balanced, evidence-informed foundation for understanding both the potential benefits and limitations of AI in mental health care.

This introductory continuing education webinar is designed to help mental health professionals:

  1. List three examples of how Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is utilized in mental health care.
  2. Describe two reasons why mental health providers should develop a foundational understanding of AI and its applications in clinical practice.
  3. Identify and explain one key potential ethical concern related to use of AI in clinical practice.

Statement of accuracy, utility, and most common risks: The materials in this course are grounded in the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct, as well as current APA guidance and publicly available resources. Given the rapidly evolving nature of AI, the presenter does not claim expertise in artificial intelligence but instead aims to support clinicians in developing a critical, ethically informed framework for evaluating its use in practice. This course is designed to be practical and clinically relevant, helping participants assess AI tools through the lens of informed consent, competence, confidentiality, risk management, and professional responsibility. It introduces APA-supported resources to assist clinicians in distinguishing between appropriate, compliant technologies and those that may pose risks to privacy or ethical standards. Risks discussed throughout the course include potential breaches of confidentiality, overreliance on AI-generated content, use outside one’s scope of competence, lack of transparency with clients, and bias or inaccuracies in AI outputs. The course emphasizes that AI should not replace clinical judgment.
