My Approach to Helping
We all deserve a happy, healthy life, following our dreams and living up to our potential. Too often our happiness is spoiled by anxiety, depression and self-doubt and these habits attack our sense of self. One of psychotherapy's primary goals is to increase compassion for ourselves. Most of our self-defeating thoughts, actions and beliefs began as survival strategies in our family of origin. These tactics served us somehow in the past but no longer do.
I have been in practice since 1986 and create a non-judgmental, empathic and safe environment to help people understand themselves and the pressures that the larger culture imposes on them. I work collaboratively; together we'll notice your strengths as well as your problems. Family history, as well as current pressures from the outside world, are important to investigate. Everyone has an innate ability to heal and thrive. Together we will explore what it would be like to follow your dreams and live the life you desire.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I have extensive experience working with people who come from homes where there was substance abuse and neglect. I specialize in seeing teens and young adults who are leaving home or about to leave home for the first time. With many of my clients but particularly with young people, I work with issues of anxiety and depression. Many of my clients are members of the LGBTQ community and I often work with these clients on issues of coming out, internalized homophobia and sexual identity.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

I strongly suggest that people shop around and visit at least three therapists before making a final decision. In therapy you will be talking about experiences, problems and issues that have the potential to bring up strong feelings of vulnerability and even shame. You need someone who is a good listener and gives you the time and space you need. You deserve someone who is empathic, experienced and non-judgmental.
