My Approach to Helping
Making an appointment to see a therapist for the first time can be an intimidating experience. This is why I do my best to ensure that you feel at ease and are given as much information as you need prior to making a decision to engage in therapy with me.
I have been seeing clients in Canada, United States, Japan, and Malaysia since 2000. I have counseled individuals, couples, and families in medical, university, corporate, non-profit, and private practice settings.
While I am open to seeing people from all backgrounds, I have specific expertise working with expatriate couples and families, business-owning families, high-level executives, and religious/ministry leaders. I specialize in issues related to relationship conflict, couple communication, marital infidelity, stress & anger management, parenting difficulties, performance anxieties, low self-esteem, childhood abuse, addictions, trauma, and sexual compulsivity.
I am licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist (license #2053) by the state of Minnesota, USA, and I am a full Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). I adhere to the ethical standards of the Minnesota Board of MFT as well as the AAMFT to ensure that you will receive the best care possible. In addition to my qualifications in marriage and family therapy, I have received accredited training in some of the best research-supported treatments, namely: EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples), PREP (Preventative and Relationship Enhancement Program), and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). In addition, I have received training in the diagnosis and treatment sexual addiction under Dr. Mark Laaser, expert and author on sex addiction.
I see my role as one where I help you move towards relational and emotional well being where you can function with honest and healthy self-determination. I will work collaboratively with you, most often in the format of short-term goal-oriented therapy (8-12 sessions). I begin with an initial intake assessment (1-2 sessions) after which I will give you feedback and recommendations. Should you decide to enter into therapy with me after the intake, I will collaborate with you on setting the goals for therapy, identify the modality of treatment intervention, and evaluate the progress of therapy over a specified number of sessions (e.g. 4-6 sessions). If you do not appear to be improving after some time (e.g. 6-8 sessions), I will re-evaluate the intervention or refer you for further help with other professionals. Most of my clients meet their goals and conclude therapy within 6-8 sessions. Some may return at a later stage when new difficulties arise.
Over the past two decades, I have acquired the following degrees: BFA in Music (York University, Canada), BA in Psychology (McGill University, Canada), MBA (Cambridge University, England), MTS in Counseling (Tyndale Seminary, Canada), and PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy (University of Minnesota, USA). Along with my academic background, I have managed a small business, worked in medium private and large public corporations, served in church ministry positions, and lectured in universities at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In November 2010, I co-founded Kinterlink, the Malaysian Network for Marriage and Family Therapists. I am also the founder of REKINDLE International Marriage and Family Therapy Center in Kuala Lumpur.
I am of Malaysian Chinese origin and my wife is a caucasian Westerner. We have two bi-cultural children. I am able to converse in intermediate level Mandarin and Hokkien (Penang), and to a lesser extent, basic level Bahasa Malaysia and French.
More Info About My Practice
I see clients on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays & Saturdays (10am-7pm). I see clients at REKINDLE International Marriage and Family Therapy Center, 42-2 Jalan 25/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur.
REKINDLE has a discount structure where fees are staggered according to the number of sessions attended -- the more sessions attended, the greater the discount. My rates begin at RM600-RM700 for the initial intake assessment and decrease as the sessions progress. Individuals/couples in full-time ministry may apply for a special full-time minister's discount. If you have behavioral health insurance, please check with your respective insurance companies regarding reimbursement for services rendered by a Minnesota-licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. If my rates are not within your budget, you may opt to see one of the other therapists at REKINDLE who work under my clinical direction and supervision (please visit our website).
I am open to traveling around East and Southeast Asia to see clients for intensive consultation/training (e.g. 3-day), especially when working with business-owning families or ministry leaders.
REKINDLE also offers a confidential men's sexual addiction treatment group for high-level executives and leaders. Participants will need to go through an assessment and individual sessions before they can be qualified to join the group.
If you have further questions or would like to make an appointment, please send me an email or call REKINDLE's office phone number, 03-2858-7469.
