My Approach to Helping
I specialize in Addiction and Substance Abuse Counseling, Couples Therapy, and Mens Issues. I split my time between therapy, teaching, and training (currently teaching a chemical dependency course to graduate students at DePaul University). I've worked with clients that have addictions to drugs, alcohol, sex, and intimacy and I utilize MI, CBT, and DBT techniques. Furthermore, I specialize in helping people for whom non-traditional approaches to treatment have been ineffective and overly constrictive(e.g. AA). Often an individual's addiction is complex and coexisting depression, anger, anxiety, trauma, and relationship problems are common.

Common themes and patterns addressed in couples counseling include: trust, intimacy, communication, friendship, spirituality, and sexual satisfaction. I also have a particular interest and expertise in helping males (adults and adolescents) to increase their emotional and relational intelligence and successfully navigate life transitions.

I completed my training at The University of Chicago and I am an adjunct professor at DePaul University in their graduate counseling program. Finally, I offer brief phone consultation to my clients free of charge, which is often essential to the success of helping my clients reach their goals.?

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I believe I work particularly well with people that are passionate about life and want to get the most out of it. Passionate people have problems because they try out new things, they take risks, and they expect to figure things out. Somewhere along the way this life process spirals out of control manifesting itself in confusion, frustration, depression, and/or addiction. It's at this point that I feel particularly adept to step in, help the client understand what's going on, and regain their passion and vigor for life.

The Duration and Frequency of Therapy

Some of my clients I see every other week and some of them I see three times every week depending on the severity of their issues and how quickly they would like to make positive changes. Typically therapy is complete in 2-4 months. That being said, people will quite often come back for a "booster" session or two several months after completing therapy either to refresh some of the skills that were learned or bring up a new challenge of something else they would like to work on. Ultimately, the client is in control and determines the frequency and length of the treatment, however 99% of the time they seek my input on the matter and usually at that point their lives have stabilized and we discuss whether maintenance sessions would be helpful or whether time, money, and energy would be better spent outside the therapy office.
