My Approach to Helping

My therapeutic focus is experiential, emotion focused and supportive. In my work with complex trauma (trauma and personality disorders), childhood abuse (sexual, physical, verbal, emotional, spiritual), and co-occurring mood disorders, my clients have voiced success in living happier lives and healthier relationships both within themselves and with others. My clients can anticipate learning effective and successful tools in creating inner emotional safety and emotion regulation. Together, we will address decreasing impulsive & self harming behaviors that once served as adaptive measures from experiences of rejection, abandonment, and/or invalidation. My focus is to support a client's enduring, positive change away from self-defeating behaviors and toward healthier experiencing of self-empowerment and happiness. I am trained in the practice of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) which is a non-invasive method of accelerating recovery from traumatic memories, onetime events or enduring childhood trauma. It is a collaborative approach utilizing eye movements to minimize negative beliefs and feelings associated with past traumatic events and memories. EMDR works directly with memory networks and creates new, more positive associations. It has been found that the distressing impact of the memory is transformed or resolved when new connections are forged with more positive and realistic information. This results in a transformation of the emotional, sensory, and cognitive components of the memory so that, when it is accessed, the individual is no longer distressed. Instead he/she recalls the incident with a new perspective, new insight, resolution of the cognitive distortions, elimination of emotional distress, and relief of related physiological arousal.
