We make decisions from an early age in our life, based upon our experience of safety in the world. We develop strategies to cope with life as it is handed to us that help us survive and get our needs met the best we can. This "belief" or schema of the world becomes our template or filter from which we screen in or screen out things that happen to us to confirm that view. When difficulties begin to arise in our adult life in relationships it can be very puzzling as to why we are getting the negative outcomes that seem to come to us over and over again. Consciously we don't want to push our partners away or feel depressed and anxious, but underneath is a belief system that we are not in touch with that drives our behavior. We get discouraged, distressed and then use more of those old coping skills we learned to feel protected, creating a vicious negative cycle inside. Those old coping skills, while necessary and useful in childhood, become impediments to getting our needs for connection and love met as adults. Looking through the lens of attachment theory, I help people understand their schema or life "philosophy" and the negative coping skills that keep them stuck in negative and even destructive cycles.Focusing on the primary emotions and deeper needs for love, safety and connection I help the individual and/or couple to re-connect with themselves and then with each other in order to find a sense of safety and peace and get out of the negative cycle.
