My Approach to Helping
Sometimes we feel unhappy due to chronic stress, family conflict or relationship struggles, loss of a loved one, or simply feeling without a purpose in life.
These issues are extremely common; roughly 25% of all adults in the United States experience depression each year. Unfortunately, only 1/3 of adults in emotional distress actually seek professional help, which is surprising considering research has proven repeatedly that psychotherapy will reduce most symptoms as well as improve functioning.
Over the years, I have helped hundreds of adults and adolescents improve their functioning and happiness by:
* Helping couples recover from infidelity
* Teaching communication and conflict resolution skills
* Developing personal coping tools to control thoughts, feelings, and behaviors,
* Providing emotional and compassionate support during difficult transitions
* Overcoming addiction and preventing relapse.
* Finding new meaning in life and building a spirituality
* Making a career choice and getting a job
I trained for three years in Europe and two years in the US on how to treat adults and teens suffering from the following issues:
* Depression
* Stress & Anxiety
* Trauma
* Codependency
* Relationship distress
* Divorce/heartbreak
* Addiction
* Adjusting to Change
* Interpersonal issues
* Work/Career issues
* Grief/Loss

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
One of the areas in which I have a developed a great deal of experience , is helping people understand addictive and co-dependent behavior. The first step is always gaining an education on just what those terms mean.
The most important point which everyone should understand in regard to addiction is that it is, in fact, a chronic relapsing brain disease. The bottom line is that when someone drinks or takes psychoactive substances on a constant basis they will eventually alter the structure of their brain. At what point the brain is altered will depend on both genetic factors as well as the age of onset of the chronic use. Environmental factors also play a role and contribute to the likelihood of someone becoming “chemically dependent” But it is becoming increasingly evident that understanding the neurophysiology of addiction will help people to recover and hopefully help their families and loved ones to have some compassion for the challenge of recovery.
The Duration and Frequency of Therapy
Although I have some longer term therapy relationships, in general I am very solution focused and my goal is to empower my clients to function independently. I tell my couples that if their relationship has not improved within five sessions then they should find another therapist. I use a great deal of psychometric testing which provide objective tools as to what needs to change removing any guess work.
