My Approach to Helping

My passion is working with young people and their families concerned about the impact of substance use in their lives. I understand that many people have been harmed by one-size-fit-all treatment approaches, so self-empowerment is my focus and my approach is person- and family-centric. There are many paths to wellness. This means that you are in charge of your treatment goals. I understand that any change is difficult so I'll meet you where you're at in the change process to empower you to take the next steps.

People use substances for reasons. I'll work with you to help you understand your relationship with substances and collaborate with you to develop tools and strategies to reduce any harms associated with your use. Goals may include safer use, reduced use or abstinence.

More Info About My Practice

My 40+ years experience has taught me that parents know their kids the best. I'll support you as parents to use your instincts to inform the difficult decisions you need to make to establish healthy boundaries while balancing your family's (and your own!) needs

My Therapy Focus

As a licensed psychologist and certified addictions counselor, I'm aware of the complex interaction among substance use, physical, emotional, social and spiritual issues. We'll work together to sort out this interaction and identify some steps to address them. You may choose to want to use more safely, use less, or abstain from substances totally. We'll identify your existing strengths and resources as well as any obstacles that are in the way of moving forward. I'll help you develop tools and strategies you'll need to help you meet your goals.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

Many who come to see me for a substance use problem are usually aware they need to do something about their problem, but are unsure of what approaches or goals will suit their particular concerns. You may have already tried other therapies or approaches and were unsuccessful or not comfortable with typical "cookie cutter" approaches to substance abuse therapy. I offer discrete, personalized therapy based on where you are the present time, and what your goals are. We focus on self-empowerment, which increases hope about moving forward
