Psycho-Physical Therapy

Psycho-Physical Therapy, developed by Bill Bowen, is a somatic psychology method that combines spiritual, psychological, and physical therapeutic techniques to enlighten a client to his or her life’s purpose. This form of therapy assists a person to discover and accept his or her inner calling by heightening his or her sense of self-awareness. Psycho-Physical Therapy is based on the theory that all people are connected through a life energy that sustains all beings. Ultimate life satisfaction and purpose are achieved when a person fully engages with the life force within themselves. When a client is enlightened to his or her inner being and inner motivations, he or she can then begin to alter and transform their relationship to their external world.

Principles of Psycho-Physical Therapy

Psycho-Physical Therapy is founded on the following principles:

  • Each part is connected to another. This fundamental core tenant stresses that every element of our experiences are interwoven. One element is responsible for influencing another and together they affect the whole circumstance.
  • The therapeutic process occurs within the body. The body is the vessel through which all transformation is created, developed, and realized.
  • Therapy is held within the confines of the therapeutic relationship. At the core of the healing process is the relationship between the client and the therapist. This safe environment provides a container in which all sharing, healing, and growth can occur.
  • The therapeutic goals drive the therapeutic process. Above all else, the therapy must serve the goals of the client. Although they may be vague initially, the therapist and client work diligently to give birth to clarity of purpose and the goals are ultimately realized.
  • The therapeutic process strives to develop resources. Therapy in its very nature is designed to provide healing. Psycho-Physical Therapy promotes healing from within and encourages the client to discover and access his or her own vast inner resources.
  • Transformation begins with awareness. With complete awareness comes enlightenment. It is at the point that enlightenment meets desire and determination that healing can begin.
  • Both analytic and process orientation techniques are used. Information gathered throughout the therapeutic process must be analyzed and evaluated to guarantee the efficacy of treatment.
  • The therapy must be integrated into the client’s life. Transformational therapy is most effective when it is woven into the everyday fabric of a person’s life. This creates a sense of fluidity and allows for a seamless journey between therapeutic healing and experiential living.
