Miami, Florida attracts celebrities, businesses, and sightseers from around the world. Located in Miami-Dade County, the city is home to 413,9001 residents and welcomes thousands of visitors each year who take advantage of the beautiful beaches, trendy shopping, and cultural events. South Beach is a popular destination for beach-goers and the Miami City Ballet, the Vizcaya Museum Gardens, and Bayside Shopping District are just some of the attractions that tourists enjoy. The city is also home to several major league sporting franchises, including the Miami Heat, the Miami Dolphins, and the Miami Marlins.

Mental Health Statistics
Florida’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Program’s (SAMH) Southern Region contracts with the South Florida Behavioral Health Network (SFBHN) to service both Monroe and Miami-Dade Counties. For the years 2011 and 2012, the SFBHN provided care to more than 24,000 adults in the region with serious mental illness. Another 2,000 adults and approximately 15,000 children in the region received service for mental health problems. More than 5,000 children and nearly 13,000 adults living in the southern region received treatment for substance abuse issues. In all, over 387,000 area residents benefited from services provided by the SAMH system of care, including prevention services, mental health services, and substance abuse services2.

Access to Recovery in Miami
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program is part of the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), which supports SAMH’s continuing focus on prevention, intervention, education, treatment, and recovery. Through online resources and multiple locations, residents can gain access to valuable reports, tools, articles, and contact information for avenues of help.

SAMH provides substance abuse detoxification treatment in an inpatient or outpatient setting. Ongoing treatment involves the individual being treated, as well as his or her family members. Staff members are able to assist individuals in areas relating to family, housing, career, continuous care, medical issues, and long-term treatment and evaluation. Recovery programs include career counseling, employment training, parenting classes, and various support groups. Miami also offers the Access to Recovery (ATR) Client Choice Program3, which allows residents to choose where they receive their addiction and recovery care. Working with a network of community, nonprofit, and faith-based organizations, the city is able to provide a wide variety of options to residents in need of addiction treatment.

Miami works hard to address the mental health needs of all its citizens and offers special programs designed to help adults with problems that may interfere with their well-being. Using a comprehensive strategy that includes veterans’ programs, forensic divisions, state and local services, reintegration classes, and specialized treatment, adults can rely on the support of the city to overcome problems and improve quality of life.

Children’s Services of SAMH allow for a broad spectrum of care, from infant care to transitional care into adulthood. Service planning and multidisciplinary teams involve community resources, mental health professionals, and family members. The goal of the Family Service Planning Team is to identify the immediate needs of the child and family and to design a program of care to meet those needs4.
