In addition to the Bengals and the Reds, 296,550 citizens1 also call Cincinnati home. Located in Hamilton County, on the north part of the great Ohio River, the city gives residents the opportunity to take in all the art, culture, and business that abounds. Fountain Square is located in the heart of the city and is a cultural hub that attracts residents and visitors alike. Aside from the traditional forms of entertainment such as the Ohio Valley Jazz Festival, residents are also able to take part in some unique celebrations, including the Flying Pig Marathon and Oktoberfest Zinzinnati, which pays tribute to the deep German roots of this city.

Mental Health Statistics
Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health Services (GCB) provided services to more than 6,100 adults from July 2012 to July 20132. Of the 4,800 served in 2012, approximately 82% lived below the poverty level. In addition, the GCB reported comorbidity in 71% of clients served and substance abuse issues in 50%. The most common mental health conditions in the region were listed as bipolar and depression; together, these represented 49% of all diagnoses. Psychotic conditions represented 40% of all cases served3.

GCB Empowers Residents
Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health Services (GCB) has worked to increase services to those residents in need of mental health assistance. The department provides comprehensive and broad services, including counseling, community outreach, vocational training, inpatient, and day treatment. Community surveys help the department identify weaknesses and recognize areas that need improvement. In recent years, these surveys have led to tremendous progress in the GCB through the development and strengthening of targeted programs. They have also helped improve quality of life and symptom severity by up to 70% based on client feedback4.

Residents in the Cincinnati area can receive help through a variety of resources. The Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) resource provides wrap-around care to individuals with severe mental illness with a goal of keeping all residents active in the community as they progress to recovery. The Counseling Treatment Unit provides residents with all modes of counseling, including individual, family, and group. These programs address trauma, coping skills, behavior modification, and other therapeutic areas of concern. Another valuable resource under the umbrella of GCB services is the Recovery Center of Hamilton County (RCHC), which offers residents the opportunity to take their personal growth to the next level. Through courses, counseling, peer support, community activities, and self-help activities, RCHC aims to empower and improve the lives of residents with mental illness throughout the county.

The county also strives to ensure its youth develop socially, mentally, and emotionally. The Transitional-Aged Youth Services department offers programs to residents between the ages of 16 and 22 who have previously received care from the children’s care network in the GCB. This department works with young people to advance their lives vocationally, educationally, and emotionally. All of the services provided by the GCB are overseen by care managers who help clients receiving benefits through the GCB coordinate care and access resources5.
