Our own minds can multiply, confuse, and perpetuate the inevitable pain in life, or heal us to greater joy, love, and creativity. I will work with you to master your imaginative creation and to steer toward the life you choose with effective strategies. Building on your strengths and the best parts of your life, we will work together to resolve your problems and fulfill your highest dreams. Tools: I have an exciting new tool in my tool box: Accelerated Resolution Therapy. It is so new that it is not among the modalities on this website but it's been around long enough for research to validate it as "evidence based." Most soldiers with PTSD have gotten good results and have completed therapy by the 3rd session. I am so thrilled with the helpfulness of A.R.T. that I have worked to become a trainer in this method. Find out more about it online. Please see my own website (above) for a link. MindBody Health: I am fascinated by how our minds relate to our bodies and vice versa. Two areas of research demonstrate how strong the connection is. 1. Adverse Childhood Events are correlated with major health problems later in life. And 2, excessive negative stress is often followed by illness. The first can be transformed using Accelerated Resolution therapy. You have resources now that can be brought to the child who experienced trauma. The second, stress, can be relieved, in many ways to protect and care for your body. Together, perhaps we will create self-hypnotic recordings to align the power of your mind with the health of your body. Some health problems, such as allergies to pets and airborne substances, seem to respond especially well to this approach. We are only beginning to know the extent to which our minds can affect our physical health. For me, there is enough evidence to direct the powers of my mind toward healing from any illness - in addition to taking advantage of the wisdom of my doctors.

Your struggles are unique and complex. I specialize in treatments for trauma, depression, anxiety, job stress, and relationship issues. I take a pragmatic and eclectic approach by integrating psychodynamic theories with evidence-based tools. I draw on treatments ranging from CBT, ACT, and CPT, tailoring treatment to your unique needs and experiences. I completed advanced training at Haverford College and the Dept. of Veteran Affairs Hospital where I continue to work as a trauma specialist. If you are struggling in your relationships, navigating a major life transition, or feeling stuck in patterns related to substance or behavioral addictions, you are not alone. Many of the people I work with are thoughtful, capable adults who find themselves repeating painful relational dynamics or feeling disconnected from the life they want to be living. Therapy can be a powerful place to understand why—and to begin doing something different. I specialize in working with adults from diverse cultural backgrounds who want more fulfilling relationships and a stronger sense of self. Together, we explore the patterns that may be contributing to your needs not being met. I help you to increase awareness of how these patterns developed and how they continue to show up in your life today. Insight is important—but real change happens through new experiences. When appropriate, I connect clients to therapy groups where they can practice new ways of relating and receive meaningful interpersonal feedback in a supportive environment.

I have been working in the helping field related to counseling for almost 20 years. In that time I have learned that the best way to help others is to be an excellent listener, to be compassionate, empathetic, and to collaborate with individuals to assist them in gaining the tools that they need to make positive change in their lives. I work hard to encourage clients that the strength for change lies within them and my job is to help them find it. I utilize a great deal of mindfulness based techniques and believe that learning the process of becoming more mindful in life can be extremely beneficial to problem solving and learning to sit with discomfort. As a counselor I do not believe that I have all of the answers or can fix anyone, however, I do believe that if the client is willing to do the work to create change in their life that I can assist them in doing so successfully. Ultimately, my goal for the counseling relationship is to assist clients in managing stress more effectively and learning skills that can be used well after the counseling relationship has terminated, in a straightforward and honest approach.

Interpersonal therapy focuses on improving communication and relationship skills, which is valuable in both personal and professional contexts common in Ashburn's collaborative work culture.
