Sugar Land is a city in Fort Bend County, Texas. It was incorporated in 1959 and covers an area of 32 square miles. Sugar Land is home to 88,500 people. The population increased by 13% between 2010 and 2017. 

The racial composition of Sugar Land is 43% white, 39% Asian, 9% Hispanic, and 7% black. Thirty-five percent of residents were born in a foreign country, and 44% speak a language other than English. Roughly 9,600 residents speak Chinese, 5,500 speak Spanish, and 3,200 speak Vietnamese.  

Sugar Land residents earn an average annual salary of $48,800. The median household income is $108,500. An estimated 57% of residents age 25 or older have attained a bachelor’s degree. Five percent of the Sugar Land population lives in poverty.

Mental Health in Sugar Land

Government officials say access to mental health care is limited in Sugar Land and the wider Fort Bend County region. Many individuals who officials say would be better suited to clinical intervention are instead getting mental health treatment in jail.
