We all encounter times in life when shadows loom large. In those moments, we need someone to walk beside us and help us see the light that is always there. I’ve lived through a variety of challenging experiences, and I know how much that support means. I decided at the age of 12 to be a counselor, and I never wavered from that path, no matter how the shadows fell. I’m passionate about helping others find the light within and see it around them as they move through and overcome their shadows. Working with children and teenagers is especially close to my heart. I use many tools in therapy, which allows me to customize treatment for the person in front of me. If you’re struggling to find the light and need someone to walk beside you, please reach out. We weren’t made to walk this path alone.
David Sternberg, LICSW, has been a practicing psychotherapist in Washington, D.C., since 2002. He specializes in treating young adults (20s and 30s), who are experiencing anxiety, depression and stress related to major life transitions. At DC Talk Therapy, all 10 of our therapists specialize in working with young adults (20s and 30s) with anxiety, depression and relationship problems. In our practice, we have a substance abuse specialist, an OCD specialist and a therapist who works with the LGBTQ community. Since we opened our practice in Washington, D.C., in 2012, we've helped nearly 2,000 people live happier and more fulfilling lives. Our therapists use a variety of therapeutic approaches but primarily use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT focuses on modifying maladaptive or distorted thoughts about ourselves or the rest of the world as a way to change resulting feelings and behavior. Our therapists believe that psychotherapy can be tremendously rewarding, even life-changing. We see therapy as very much a collaborative process, so we ask clients for feedback throughout the process. We want the client's experience to be as valuable as possible. Our office staff answers the phone live Monday through Friday 9 am-5 pm and they can often schedule you an appointment within 2-3 business days.
I work with individuals and couples in Philadelphia who are ready to heal from past hurt, improve communication, become better versions of themselves, and feel more emotionally connected. Whether you’re coping with anxiety, depression, betrayal, or burnout, therapy can help you slow down, understand your emotions, and feel grounded again. If you’re feeling distant, overwhelmed, misunderstood, or just unsure how to rebuild trust and closeness, it's okay. Together, we’ll create space for healing, growth, and meaningful change that lasts. I specialize in emotionally focused and relational therapy with mindfulness to support individuals and couples through attachments, trust issues, communication, big life transitions, and more. In our work, you’ll learn to process your emotions, break old patterns, and create new ways of connecting that bring more peace, security, and understanding. Therapy with me feels like a calm, caring conversation—warm, genuine, and judgment-free. Change takes courage, but you don’t have to do it alone. As a Medicaid-accepted therapist in Philadelphia, I’m here to support your healing and connection.
Stressed? Overwhelmed? Struggling with making life decisions? Congratulations! You've taken the first step towards seeking change. Listening to intuition and addressing what distresses you is a sign of strength. Respect, empathy, support, active listening, collaboration and confidentiality are a top priority and values that guide my practice. I welcome the opportunity to work with you to uncover your inner strengths and live your life reaching towards your fullest potential. Self-discovery and awareness occur in the context of a working therapeutic relationship; reasons why I feel the fit between therapist and patient is so important. I encourage you to follow your inner voice about what feels right when searching for a therapist. Each patient and couple is unique and therefore I use an individually tailored eclectic and flexible approach integrating techniques from various modalities depending on patients' needs. I encourage individuals and couples to be active participants in their treatment enabling them to explore previously undiscovered aspects of themselves. Within the context of the therapeutic relationship, patients can explore patterns of behavior related to beliefs, attitudes and past experiences. I would be happy to speak with you during a complimentary phone consultation. I warmly welcome your call or email.

I believe therapy works best when you feel genuinely understood, supported, and comfortable being yourself. My approach is warm, collaborative, and practical. I strive to create a space where you can talk openly without fear of judgment, while also learning meaningful tools to help you feel better in your daily life. I primarily use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based strategies, and strengths-based approaches to help clients better understand the connection between thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and behaviors. Together, we work to identify patterns that may be contributing to anxiety, stress, depression, self-doubt, or feeling emotionally “stuck,” while building healthier coping strategies and greater self-awareness. I also recognize that life experiences, relationships, family dynamics, health concerns, and chronic stress can deeply affect emotional well-being. Therapy is not about “fixing” you. It is about helping you better understand yourself, develop resilience, and move toward a life that feels more manageable, balanced, and authentic. I value creating a strong therapeutic relationship built on trust, empathy, and collaboration. My goal is to help you feel empowered, emotionally supported, and better equipped to navigate challenges both inside and outside of therapy.
My primary treatment approach is cognitive-behavioral which is solution-focused and generally shorter-term, however, in reality, we all generally benefit from a variety of therapeutic strategies and i will often utilize complementary and eclectic techniques that enables a more personalized treatment approach and relies on best practices for your specific issues. You will find me to be an active and engaged therapist and we will work together in a team-oriented and collaborative style. I often recommend activities to practice between sessions, and these might include a journal, trying out new communication skills and problem-solving or coping techniques that we have practiced, brief reading assignments, some research, relaxation techniques, and a variety of other options. I believe humor is an important element in the therapeutic process, and to life in general, and I strive to create a relaxing and trusting environment with my clients. I am very happy to answer any questions you might have, and if I am unsure, I will do all that I can to help point you in the right direction. I consider it an honor to assist clients on their personal journey in therapy. Participating in therapy is an important step in reclaiming your happiness and satisfaction and I take me role in providing assistance on that journey seriously as I appreciate the time, cost, and emotional investment of this choice.

I’m a clinical psychologist specializing in insight-oriented therapy that helps you understand your symptoms and experiences to inform your direction in life. I do this by listening and helping you put your feelings into words. In the initial interview, we will try to understand why you are looking for therapy now and what your personal and therapeutic goals are. The people I work with tend to struggle with mood disorders, relationship issues, low self-esteem, and difficulty managing strong feelings.
