It is always my goal to create a warm, safe, and judgment-free therapeutic space for my clients to feel comfortable sharing.
It is always my goal to create a warm, safe, and judgment-free therapeutic space for my clients to feel comfortable sharing.
I meet clients where they are in an attempt to create a safe space for them to be fully involved in their treatment.
Accepting new clients remotely and in person. I've practiced psychotherapy for over 40 years, and during most of that time also taught psychiatric residents at Johns Hopkins Medical School. My areas of specialization are bipolar type 2 and borderline personality condition. I've also worked with many entrepreneurs since the publication of my book, The Hypomanic Edge: The Link Between (a Little) Craziness and (a Lot of) Success in America. What's different about me is that after receiving traditional training, I've integrated it with meditation. Mindfulness, especially when combined with therapy, provides calm, objective self-awareness that leads to self-control, which may lessen the need for medication. More meditation can mean less medication. More recently, I'm working with research subjects who have undergone psilocybin therapy for a book, "The Cosmic Consciousness Cure." Affecting the same brain areas as meditation, psilocybin therapy produces a quantum leap in mindfulness. I'd be happy to speak with anyone seeking legal psilocybin treatment. I can't provide it, but it is now legally available in Oregon, and I would be happy to work with clients on integrating that experience.
If you’re feeling stuck—knowing what’s hard but unsure how to break through—you're not alone. Whether you're grappling with trauma, anxiety, or the lasting effects of sexual or domestic abuse, it’s normal to feel uncertain about the next step. Therapy can be a safe and powerful space to unpack these struggles, find clarity, and learn how to move forward in a way that feels right for you. This holistic approach helps clients heal, gain insight, and build resilience on their journey to growth and recovery. Life is already hard enough without trauma; allow yourself the opportunity to unburden, learn new strategies and perspectives, and start living authentically. Searching for a therapist to guide you on your journey towards healing, change, and empowerment can be time-consuming and daunting. Everyone has the right to quality and affirming care, and that starts from the first moment you reach out to me. I will strive to always provide a safe, open, and non-judgmental atmosphere that will foster the positive therapeutic alliance needed to help you achieve your goals. My approach is not one-size-fits-all, and I only see a limited number of clients, which allows us the opportunity to set a focus and the pace you require along your path.

I believe the therapeutic relationship itself is a healing experience. During sessions, we are able to process your thoughts, emotions, and lived truth in context with your current life. We work together, with you in charge of the pace and direction that we go in. I offer you a mirror to see your life from different perspectives, as we so often get stuck in one thought pattern. I believe you have deep wisdom within you; my job is to help you connect to your inner self so that you can gain insight that allows you to live your best life.
I have been working in the helping field related to counseling for almost 20 years. In that time I have learned that the best way to help others is to be an excellent listener, to be compassionate, empathetic, and to collaborate with individuals to assist them in gaining the tools that they need to make positive change in their lives. I work hard to encourage clients that the strength for change lies within them and my job is to help them find it. I utilize a great deal of mindfulness based techniques and believe that learning the process of becoming more mindful in life can be extremely beneficial to problem solving and learning to sit with discomfort. As a counselor I do not believe that I have all of the answers or can fix anyone, however, I do believe that if the client is willing to do the work to create change in their life that I can assist them in doing so successfully. Ultimately, my goal for the counseling relationship is to assist clients in managing stress more effectively and learning skills that can be used well after the counseling relationship has terminated, in a straightforward and honest approach.

One of my favorite quotes is: "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." To me, life is a journey. There will be many bumps, bruises, and obstacles along the way. That's okay. It's how you overcome those hurdles that count. Some need more assistance than others on this journey, and that's okay too. My approach is to promote healing and personal growth and development along this journey called life. I do not claim to have all of the answers. I believe that everyone is the expert of their own lives. My role is to assist you with getting out of your own way and discovering the path that you want to follow.
