My Approach to Helping
I graduated with a Masters in Counselling degree from HELP University, and I am registered and licensed with the Malaysian Board of Counsellors. At my counselling practice, ABRI Integrated Mental Health, I work with individuals, couples, and families. I am a clinical member of the Malaysian Marriage and Family Therapy Association (MyMFT), and a certified PREPARE-ENRICH (PE) relationship and marriage program facilitator. As a value-add service to clients, I am also certified in the use of the Introduction to The Prevention and Relationship Education Program (PREP) curriculum in my work. One of my interests is providing talks and workshops, both as a professional counsellor and as life coach to groups and the corporate world, including through Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs).
I believe everyone is unique, has the capacity for growth, and the choice to lead meaningful, productive lives. I also believe that one’s early attachment experiences can influence their adult relationships. I view clients from a systemic perspective, and work with them towards increased self-awareness that leads to real, impactful and lasting change.
After obtaining my Bachelor in Applied Science (Hons, Physics) from Universiti Sains Malaysia, I started my engineering career in the Semiconductor-Electronics manufacturing industry where I stayed for 20 enriching years working for multinational companies such as Intel, Hewlett-Packard, Agilent, Silterra Malaysia, and later at Infineon Technologies. In the corporate world, I was a technical contributor and later, in people management.
Growing up in Malaysia and having attended the national schools, I appreciate the different cultures and races. I often volunteer in non-profit organizations working among the youth, working adults and families. I have been married to Jenny Ooi since 1995, and blessed with two teenage children, Ryan, 14 and Ryna, 13. I am currently pursuing my Postgraduate Certificate in Therapeutic Play Skills with Play Therapy UK (PTUK).
