I provide a warm, open communication and engaged style of therapy.
I provide a warm, open communication and engaged style of therapy.
I work with my clients to create an open and safe environment where thoughts and feelings can be shared without fear of judgment.
You feel caught in cycles that no longer serve you, but after so long, you don’t know any other way. In the quiet moments, you might find yourself wondering, “What is wrong with me?” That stress often feels like a spring winding tighter in your chest: a constant state of waiting for the other shoe to drop, or a quiet numbing of your own feelings and boundaries just to get through the day. I want to offer you a different perspective: What if nothing is actually wrong with you? You aren’t malfunctioning; you are adapting. You are experiencing the exhaustion of a system that has worked overtime to help you survive. As an Internal Family Systems (IFS) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapist, I offer therapy for clients in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Together, we build a relationship with protective parts and gently process how trauma is held in the body and nervous system, at a pace that feels safe and supportive.
People enter therapy for many different reasons, but often underneath those reasons is a sense of being stuck in a physical, mental, or emotional place they don't want to be in. For relationships, people often feel stuck in negative patterns of interacting with each other or stuck in a place of pain which they blame on the other. I see myself as partnering with my clients to help them get unstuck and reach their goals for themselves or their relationships. I am active in the therapy session by helping people process more deeply what they are going through, offering new perspectives on the situation, and challenging patterns of thought or behavior that may be contributing to what's happening. I do not see people who come into therapy as sick or weak. I think it takes a lot of strength to reach out for help when times are tough. Therefore, I have respect for those who walk into my office, and I try to do everything I can to get them to where they want to be in life.
We all have challenges that hold us back and keep us from living our best life. Maybe you have been disappointed, experienced loss, trauma, or rejection. Perhaps you have struggled with divorce, anxiety, isolation, or low self-esteem. You may be going through a difficult transition. I offer a blend of tools to help you begin to feel better. I bring solid experience and research-based strategies to my work. I believe in working with each person in a way that is individualized for them and honors the way they think and feel. I strive to make everyone feel comfortable, safe and supported during our sessions. I am a cognitive behavioral therapist, but also draw from many other techniques.
I help individuals with issues such as depression, anxiety, relationships challenges, childhood trauma, stress, and families navigating behavioral issues. I teach my clients communication skills that improve their relationships. Those skills boost my clients' power and voice, as well as their intimacy with their significant others. I rely on a number of approaches, including Gestalt, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, somatic experiencing, and experiential dynamic psychotherapy. I help clients dealing with traumatic stress reduce panic, pain, numbness and hyper-arousal in response to life and relationships difficulties. I combine calming and relationship skills to help children, adolescents, and young adults reduce family discord and ADHD, and increase self-efficacy. I help my clients navigate their behaviors, emotions, cognition, and physiology. I help couples and individuals explore the ways that small changes in attitudes and stances can nurture new ways of feeling, thinking, and being in the world. I help my clients find new solutions so they can connect with a sense of joy and competence.

We live in a broken and fallen world. At times life knocks us down and we find it difficult to cope or know what to do. As a counselor it is my job to meet you where you are and together address the concerns you are facing. I work from a Christian worldview and use this as a framework to assist you in evaluating your thoughts, situations, relationships and strengths. Regardless of your religion or faith, it would be my honor to work with you and get you on your desired path.
My goal is for you to leave our therapy sessions feeling strong, empowered and more confident than you came in. I've seen far too many clients walk through their lives feeling aimless and uncertain about their lives and where they are going. I'm here to help you fix that. My style is hands-on and solution focused. I believe counseling is a service and that service is meant to help you find ways to change your life for the better. I want you to leave our sessions together knowing that you have control over your life even though you've come to believe that you do not. However, none of that can happen without a strong and meaningful therapeutic relationship. I've worked with such an array of different clients over the years and I've always found a way to connect with all of them. I want to make counseling for you an enjoyable yet productive experience where you walk away knowing it was the right decision to take that leap into therapy. It doesn't matter what is bringing you to therapy because the most important aspect is your desire to help yourself get better. Even if you're coming in because of someone putting pressure on you; the fact that you value that relationship to make a change speaks volumes about your character and willingness. My clinical expertise is addiction treatment (both user and impacted family), and my other expertise is in relationship counseling. I work with several couples and also those who are unsure about their relationship. There isn't a wrong time to enter counseling. So whatever your crisis may be at this time in your life, let's sit down together and talk about it. I guarantee you'll feel better about it and have a sense of direction as to what changes you need and are willing to make so you can change your life. I look forward to meeting you.
David Sternberg, LICSW, has been a practicing psychotherapist in Washington, D.C., since 2002. He specializes in treating young adults (20s and 30s), who are experiencing anxiety, depression and stress related to major life transitions. At DC Talk Therapy, all 10 of our therapists specialize in working with young adults (20s and 30s) with anxiety, depression and relationship problems. In our practice, we have a substance abuse specialist, an OCD specialist and a therapist who works with the LGBTQ community. Since we opened our practice in Washington, D.C., in 2012, we've helped nearly 2,000 people live happier and more fulfilling lives. Our therapists use a variety of therapeutic approaches but primarily use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT focuses on modifying maladaptive or distorted thoughts about ourselves or the rest of the world as a way to change resulting feelings and behavior. Our therapists believe that psychotherapy can be tremendously rewarding, even life-changing. We see therapy as very much a collaborative process, so we ask clients for feedback throughout the process. We want the client's experience to be as valuable as possible. Our office staff answers the phone live Monday through Friday 9 am-5 pm and they can often schedule you an appointment within 2-3 business days.
I provide individual therapy (in person andor virtually) for late adolescents and adults in the greater Washington, DC area and I am PsyPact licensed so can see people in participating PsyPact states. I also provide comprehensive ADHD assessments. I have a particular passion for working with young adults who are figuring out and navigating their next "chapter" of life. I aim to help individuals capitalize on their strengths and work with their limitations, change their responses to interpersonal problems, and help them form new and improved healthy relationships and ways of relating to their world that does not repeat previously unhealthy patterns. By bringing support, encouragement, humor, and a nonjudgmental perspective to our work together, I meet clients where they are, whether they have been to therapy before or are exploring therapy for the first time. Knowing how important the therapy relationship is, my primary goal is to make my clients feel heard, understood, and hopeful. I adapt my approach and style, as needed, to work with my clients' unique needs. I am always happy to jump on the phone for a brief consultation to determine if we may be a good fit to work together.
I provide short- and longer-term treatment by collaborating with clients to determine an approach that best meets their needs. SPECIALTIES: anxiety, depression, racial trauma, family conflict, LGBTQ challenges, parent-child relational issues, foster care, aging milestones, and parenting and divorce with high-conflict personalities. MODALITIES: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and brief solution-focused therapy. I have over 10 years of professional experience working with individuals and families involved in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, as well as adult and aging services, and I provide individual and family counseling. I received a B.A. in Radio and Television from The George Washington University and spent 17 years in the television industry (C-SPAN, Fox News, Al Jazeera English, and the Discovery Channel). I have an MSW from Virginia Commonwealth University, and I began my social work career with foster care families before working with older adults.
