I am the type of therapist who pushes her clients to think outside of the box and to be uncomfortable at times, and to work hard on seeing all perspectives.
I am the type of therapist who pushes her clients to think outside of the box and to be uncomfortable at times, and to work hard on seeing all perspectives.
I work with people who are thoughtful and self-aware, but feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to move forward. You might find yourself caught between who you are and who you feel you’re “supposed” to be—driven more by pressure or anxiety than by a clear sense of what actually feels right. In our work together, the focus is on helping you understand yourself more deeply while also creating meaningful change. Sessions are active and collaborative, often incorporating humor and metaphor, with a balance of insight and practical movement forward. I draw from relational cultural theory, narrative therapy, and solution-focused approaches, adapting to what feels most helpful for you. My work is trauma-informed and identity-affirming, and I approach your story with curiosity, care, and respect. As a cis, queer man from the evangelical South, I bring lived insight into how power, privilege, and systems shape identity and mental health. I’m mindful of how these dynamics can show up both in your life and in the therapy room. Over time, clients often feel more grounded in who they are, more confident in their choices, and better able to move through uncertainty without losing themselves. If you’re considering therapy, I offer a free consultation to talk through what you’re looking for and see if we’re a good fit.
I understand that seeking therapy can be daunting, and view therapy as a holistic process, striving to provide a warm, empathic, and accepting atmosphere, to support clients who are committed to making lasting change. I am Licensed Professional Counselor, and have extensive clinical experience working with individuals and couples struggling with relationship issues, trauma, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, low self-esteem, grief and loss, and questions of identity. I am passionate about helping couples and individuals grow and thrive, improving communication, working through trauma, and identifying and achieving goals. I received my Master of Clinical Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in 2011, and since then have undergone continued training specializing in trauma-informed approaches. I am a Gottman Method Level 1 trained therapist. I operate from a trauma-informed perspective recognizing that many people have had or currently experience trauma. I understand the need for emotional safety and trustworthiness in a therapist and work with clients to regain a sense of empowerment in their lives. My style is eclectic, but my work is trauma informed, using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help clients stop fighting against the pain of their past, and build rich and meaningful lives. For couples work, I pull strongly from the Gottman Method. I strongly believe that every person holds the capacity for growth, and can benefit from a trusting and supportive therapist to help them acknowledge and ignite that ability within themselves. I consider the client as the expert in their life and trust that a positive client and therapist relationship is key to facilitating change. Through a safe and professional relationship, the therapist can help the client deeply examine their life, and identify areas for change. Utilizing individualized treatment plans, I help clients develop goals tailored to their specific needs, and identify coping and management strategies to help clients regain a sense of control in life.
Are you feeling overwhelmed to the point that is effecting your focus or ability to sleep at night? Do you find your self feeling sad or not feeling anything at all and you can't see to enjoy even your favorite activities and interests? I am a licensed professional counselor who has been helping people experience breakthough in their minds and emotions for over 6 years. I have a fiery passion for helping people gain insight into their patterns of behavior, including linking their past to their present. I have a compassionate, client-led approach to therapy, tailoring the work that I do to each individual client. I start by completing a comprehensive intake assessment where I screen each person who comes to see me for various mental health conditions. I always provide information along the way and share with clients what I observe and any diagnoses that I assess them with. Then I work with the person to develop a comprehensive treatment plan to identify the goals and objectives of therapy within the first month of counseling. Within the working process, I combine compassionate, empathetic listening with teaching practice skills to provide an avenue for making change possible.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Virginia. Born and raised in Iowa, I attended Iowa State University, graduating with a double major in Child, Adult, and Family Services and Spanish. I have traveled and lived in many places throughout the world, and have developed an appreciation for the differences we all have, but also the similarities that unite us. I received my master’s degree from Rutgers University. In my 18 years of work experience, I have worked supporting children, adolescents, and families. That experience includes working with trauma, depression, anxiety, school related anxiety and refusal, conflict between parents and children, involvement in the juvenile justice system, immigration stress and trauma, and crisis intervention. I have experience in child and adolescent therapy, family therapy, parenting, group therapy, and school-based mental health. I meet the child and family where they are on their journey and works collaboratively to develop realistic goals that will improve functioning in all environments. I utilize a strengths-based, solution-focused and family systems approach. I encourage children and families to share their culture and integrate the unique cultural experiences of families into treatment. I enjoy spending time outside, watching movies, reading books, and crocheting. I also enjoy various forms of exercise, like weightlifting and yoga. I enjoy watching (and sometimes playing) sports. I bring creativity and energy to my practice and am mindful and strategic about interventions used when working with children and families. Mental health is an important part of our being. Just like we eat food to feed our physical body, we must also get what we need to be mentally and emotionally resilient.
My work combines my personal knowledge and experiences of the special challenges and gifts that define the creative experience with insight work and mindfulness-based psychotherapy. I've worked with writers, musicians, dancers, painters, computer programmers, tattoo artists, and more, to help them work through creative issues, relationship problems, anxiety, and many other concerns. In my experience, people who have spent their lives developing their creativity have a unique skillset which is often overlooked as a place from which to draw strength and guidance in building relationships, coping with stress, and making life decisions. I tend to focus on strengths: you might be surprised at what you already know. You can read more about my work with creative people at my external site, linked at left.
At Power Counseling PLLC, we are five different clinicians. However, we have one thing in common. We are all committed to satisfactorily resolve the issues that the client brings to the therapy room. We work with individuals, couples, families and groups, offering individual, couple, family and group therapy. Our primary therapy modality is cognitive-behavioral therapy, but we also use solution focused therapy a lot. We are located in Washington DC, but we are licensed to practice in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. Our director also offers clinical supervision for those who need it. Now, we offer only teletherapy. We believe that people can change, and that therapy is about assisting clients with what they need to change so that they can lead a healthy life and achieve their life’s goals. We assist our clients to attain self-exploration, resilience, empathy, and emotional empowerment. We firmly believe in the inherent inner powers of each individual to heal. We believe that everyone possesses the necessary internal resources to overcome emotional difficulty and flourish in life. This belief guides our approach to therapy. We strive to empower our clients, in a collaborative manner. Our goal is to provide a holistic, solution-focused, empathy-driven, and emotionally empowering therapy approach. That way, we support my clients to achieve the goals for which they seek therapy. We adopt an inherently collaborative approach. It’s like a partnership in which the client has a voice and can set the agenda for the sessions and take ownership of the outcome of our work together. We empower clients to make decisions about their care, with our guidance. The goal here is to work with the client to identify and implement effective solutions to the issues that they bring to the therapy room. As necessary, we educate and guide our clients to use internal and external resources available to them to heal. We work to empower clients to make decisions and take actions that align with their values and aspirations.

If you’re someone who appears to “have it all together” on the outside while privately struggling with the weight of life's challenges on the inside, you don't have to go through it alone. I help adults navigate anxiety, quiet the inner critic, and move through challenging life transitions, such as the loss of a beloved person or pet, career changes, midlife shifts, parenthood, caregiving, or adjusting to a new medical diagnosis. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, emotionally drained, or disconnected from yourself, therapy can provide a space to slow down, gain clarity, and reconnect with your strengths. My approach is warm, collaborative, and tailored to each client’s unique experience. I combine a person-centred style with evidence-based strategies, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), to support meaningful, lasting change. Together, we’ll create practical tools and insights that fit your goals, values, and day-to-day life. Reaching out for support is a meaningful first step. When you’re ready, I’m here to help you move toward building the life you want.
Are you hoping to deepen your relationships? Wondering where your “person” is? Feeling anxious or confused, or having a hard time imagining your future? Do you want to feel more authentic? Together, we can work toward understanding and growth. Through the relationship between us, we’ll explore how you communicate with others, consider the past experiences that informed who you are, and help you define who you want to become. Through collaborative, interactive sessions in an affirming, nurturing environment, you’ll learn more about yourself and how to implement strategies that enable you to live your life more fully and joyfully. My goal is to help you uncover your potential and establish positive lifestyle changes. With my support, you’ll examine your behavioral patterns, better understand and manage your feelings, and develop skills so that you can enhance your relationships and quality of life. I have over 15 years of experience as a psychotherapist who works with individuals and groups in the DC metro area. I’m psychodynamically trained, but my practice is far from Freudian psychoanalysis. My approach is eclectic - the most important thing to me is our working relationship, so I customize my work to serve you. Working with me, we’ll incorporate techniques from a variety of theories and methods including Relational Psychotherapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
You may be thoughtful, capable, and deeply caring, yet in your closest relationships, something still feels off. You might notice yourself reacting more strongly than you want to, repeating the same patterns, or leaving conversations feeling misunderstood or disconnected. If you’re here, you’ve likely already spent time trying to understand it. And at some point, it begins to feel like insight alone isn’t enough. I help you slow things down and begin to make sense of what’s happening beneath those moments. Together, we look at the patterns shaping how you relate, how you respond under stress, how you protect yourself, and how those patterns show up in your relationships today. This work is not about fixing you. It’s about helping you understand your experience in a way that creates space for you to respond with more clarity, steadiness, and intention. As we work together, you’ll begin to notice: less reactivity more awareness in the moment a stronger sense of yourself and a more grounded way of connecting I provide a space that is thoughtful, steady, and nonjudgmental, where you don’t have to perform to be understood. From there, real change becomes possible.
The longer I've worked in the mental health field, the more I've come to appreciate that many of the struggles that leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or anxious are rooted in our very human desire for certainty, safety, and control. Our brains are wired to seek predictability. When life feels uncertain, painful, or outside of our control, it's natural to search for ways to regain a sense of security. Sometimes this shows up through perfectionism, overthinking, people-pleasing, rigidity, self-criticism, or trying to anticipate every possible outcome. While these strategies often develop for understandable reasons, and may have even helped us survive at one point, they can eventually become exhausting, isolating, and keep us from living fully in the present. At the foundation of my work is dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), not simply as a set of coping skills, but as a way of approaching life with greater mindfulness, flexibility, self-awareness, and acceptance. I am deeply passionate about teaching practical life skills that help people build emotional resilience while creating lives that feel meaningful and aligned with their values. At the same time, my work extends beyond skills alone. I view each person through a humanistic, trauma-informed, and existential lens, recognizing that our relationships, identities, lived experiences, and search for meaning all shape the ways we understand ourselves and navigate the world. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and grounded in the belief that you are more than a diagnosis or a collection of symptoms. Together, we'll explore the patterns that no longer serve you, develop greater self-understanding, and build the confidence to respond to life's challenges with intention rather than fear. Whether we're practicing mindfulness, exploring the impact of past experiences, strengthening relationships, or learning to tolerate uncertainty, my goal is to help you loosen the grip of overcontrol, cultivate self-compassion, and create a life that feels authentic, connected, and fulfilling. Healing isn't about becoming a different person. It's about reconnecting with the person you've always been beneath the fear, self-doubt, and protective strategies that once kept you safe. If you're ready to begin that journey, I'd be honored to walk alongside you.
