My approach in therapy is collaborative, supportive, and goal oriented.
Beginning therapy can feel like a big step, whether you’re looking for support right now or navigating an upcoming transition. My goal is to create a space that feels warm, welcoming, and genuinely safe for you to show up as you are. In our work together, we’ll focus on helping you better understand yourself and make changes that feel realistic and sustainable. Sessions may include both reflection and practical steps forward, depending on what feels most helpful to you. I recognize that societal systems, bias, and discrimination can have a real impact on mental health, relationships, and sense of self. As a queer-identifying therapist, I offer gender-affirming, celebratory care and work closely with individuals from marginalized communities. I often support clients navigating identity, relationships, anxiety, depression, and life transitions. Together, we’ll work toward helping you feel more grounded, more confident, and better able to move through challenges with clarity. I have experience supporting both individuals and couples as they move through periods of change and uncertainty. Over time, clients often find they feel more connected to themselves, more secure in their decisions, and better able to handle what life brings. If you’re considering therapy, you don’t need to have everything figured out to reach out. Reaching out doesn’t commit you to anything. It’s simply a chance to see if this feels like a good fit.
I subscribe to a holistic approach when it comes to therapy. By that I mean that I'm interested in understanding you as a complete person, rather than just a collection of symptoms or problems. I'm not interested in gathering information to support a specific diagnosis. Instead, I want to hear your story, so I can see life through your eyes and gain a better understanding of what makes you tick (as well as what might be ticking you off at the moment). Once we identify those factors, we'll have a better grasp on how to get you to a better place mentally and emotionally.
My approach to helping is collaborative. I hope that you and I can work as a team to explore your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, relationships, and family history. I want us to understand your needs, triggers, strengths, and coping strategies. I not only want to understand your past, but see how you manage your daily life and reach future goals. I am an interactive therapist. I want you to feel heard, understood, and respected. Therapy is not easy and we will have to face your struggles. Therefore I want you to feel safe and comfortable. I work with honesty and transparency. We will evaluate your progress to make sure that you are working in the direction of your goals and my approach fits you. I believe therapy works best if it's consistent and weekly. With effort and determination you are likely to see positive results.

I an enthusiastic believer in the ability of people to fully heal from eating disorder, OCD, and anxiety disorders. Are you tired of fighting with your own mind? Is your relationship with food, body image, and self-esteem starting to run your life? Are you exhausted at the thought of having to make one more scary decision all by yourself? If you said "yes" to any of these questions, I want you to know that there is hope and that you can build a better life. My name is Joe Sciarretta and since 2010 I have been helping people with eating disorders, OCD, and anxiety cope with and overcome their painful patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. I am an avidly optimistic therapist for my clients and I believe that anyone, really anyone, can change. I have worked at some of the top eating disorder and mental health treatment centers in the surrounding NJ area. From those experiences I have developed a good clinical intuition on how to help people who are highly motivated, somewhat unsure, or fearful of change. My practice focuses on a few key therapeutic approaches. I draw heavily on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (CBT) and Exposure Therapies, like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD. I am an avid proponent of the 8 Keys to Recovery from an Eating Disorder book by Carolyn Costin and Gwen Grabb. I also provide Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD and trauma issues, especially when the coincide with an eating disorder. My real specialty is in helping people who are unsure of what they want out of recovery. Oftentimes change can be scary, and recovery itself can be challenging (especially at the start). This is why I focus on working with someone 'where they are at'. If you want to know more, please reach out to my office and have a conversation. I offer free phone consultations and no commitment therapy trials. Start your journey towards feeling better today.
