Towson is the administrative center of Baltimore County, Maryland. It has a land area of 14 square miles. The community is named after Ezekiel Towson, who arrived in the area in 1750.

The rising cost of health care for the 1,200 inmates at the Baltimore County jail in Towson is a concern for county officials. By 2017, that figure had grown to 50%.
