My style is warm, engaged, responsive, and consistent. I use empathy and, at times, humor to create a comfortable environment for individuals to share their struggles, express difficult emotions, and take risks toward change in order to enhance their relationships, self-acceptance, and overall well-being. To tailor therapy to an individual's needs, I draw on insight-oriented, cognitive-behavioral, and mindfulness methods. I believe that the combination of a strong therapeutic relationship based on compassion and acceptance, along with help to identify and alter negative patterns of behavior, can lead to great change. I welcome individuals with concerns arising from life transitions, loss, relationships, depression, and anxiety. I am particularly sensitive to issues unique to women and those arising from the intersection of cultures. Being a bi-cultural first generation American, I am able to engage clients in exploration of issues and concerns related to cultural identity. At the same time, I take a broad and flexible view of identity and do not consider it necessary for clients to have these concerns in order to be a good fit in our work together. In my experience, clients with a range of concerns that engage in therapy can achieve significant improvements. I find great personal satisfaction in ensuring that each individual that enters my practice has the best opportunity I can provide to address their challenges. I have many years of clinical experience that I bring to my work. I received my doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Denver in 1998. I have been licensed for over 25 years and have practiced in North Carolina and the District of Columbia. I serve on the Board of Directors of the Washington Society of Psychoanalytic Psychology. I support clients with needed documentation who wish to file their own insurance claims. I am not an "in network" provider for insurance companies. I accept a limited number of clients on a reduced-fee basis to assist individuals who may not otherwise be in a position to obtain therapy. My office is conveniently located near the Friendship Heights red-line metro station.

I have worked with clients with anxiety, depression, trauma, addictions and mood disorders. I enjoy helping those who struggle with a desire to change behaviors. If we could think our way into the life we wanted, we would already be there. But healing and growth is not simply about thinking. It is about attending to our feelings, accepting ourselves where we are, and believing in possibilities. The Four Corners Counseling & Well-being way of therapy, practiced by the founder, Hetty Barnett, and all associates: For Thinking Women (and Men, too): Are you struggling to feel better about yourself and your life? If you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed, if your relationships are causing pain or confusion, we can help. We know from hard-earned experience that being an intelligent "over-functioner" does not mean we can easily soothe our emotional pain and create a balanced life. My associates and I can help you tap into your inner wisdom and strength to create the life you desire. For couples on the brink: At Four Corners Counseling & Well-being, we believe that couples deserve a safe space and a competent therapist to help them navigate their relationship, and move beyond problems to possibilities. This work is sacred, and couples who seek our help are doing so not only for themselves, but for the benefit of their children (if there are any), for their families, and for future generations. We have no pre-determined expectation of how a relationship will unfold. We do firmly believe that any work the members of a couple do to speak for their feelings (not from them) and listen to their partner from a grounded sense of self can reap many benefits in the future, no matter what the outcome. People can grow; people DO grow as they work with me. It takes a village to raise a relationship, and we want to be part of that village. Internal Family Systems (IFS) model of therapy: We are trained in IFS, the fastest growing therapy model today. As a clinical treatment, IFS has been rated effective for improving general functioning and well-being. In addition, it has been rated promising for improving phobia, panic, and generalized anxiety disorders; trauma resolution; physical health conditions; personal resilienceself-concept; and depression and depressive symptoms. Internal Family Systems can help clients learn ways to better relate to themselves, and move toward the 8 C’s of Self-Leadership: calmness, curiosity, clarity, compassion, confidence, creativity, courage, and connectedness.

If someone is struggling with today's news and events, surviving a difficult upbringing, or wrestling with issues of identity, the best thing they can do for themselves is to find that safe, affirming space that allows them to speak freely without fear of judgement. My goal is to provide the emotional, physical, and affirming space for that very thing to happen. My clientele consists of students, mental health professionals, veterans, seniors, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. I hold master's degrees in trauma informed counseling and the arts. I help clients use imagery, symbolism, and creative expression to uncover meaning and insight. I currently work with individuals ages 8 and up, I have worked with anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, grief and loss, life transitions, and trauma-related issues. As an African American woman, I understand the importance of culturally responsive mental health care and strive to create a therapeutic relationship where clients feel safe discussing every aspect of their identity. I believe therapy should honor who you are while helping you develop practical tools to navigate life's challenges with greater confidence and resilience. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and tailored to your individual needs. I utilize evidence-based therapies, including person-centered therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), motivational interviewing, strengths-based interventions, and trauma-informed care.
