My Approach to Therapy

My approach to therapy is an integrative one, allowing me to tailor treatment to each individual based on their unique strengths, limitations, needs, and goals. The alliance between client and therapist is one of the most important factors in therapy outcome. For this reason, I always strive to build a collaborative professional relationship with my clients that is based on trust and mutual respect. I do this by showing my clients unconditional positive regard that honors their individuality, authenticity, and their ability to choose their own path through self-determination and Self-leadership. It is my goal to always provide a warm, welcoming, and non-judgmental environment for my clients to explore and process their issues and concerns. I also encourage clients to learn and develop the skills necessary to create and maintain positive changes in their lives long beyond their time in therapy. While I am highly skilled in mental health assessment and diagnosis, I believe that a diagnosis is merely one tool for informing treatment. Regardless of diagnosis, it's very important to me to treat the individual rather than the label. I also wish to help my clients enhance and add value to their lives in addition to alleviating their bothersome symptoms.

My Practice & Services

I earned my Master of Arts degree from Wayne State University in Counseling Psychology in 2014, and I am a Masters Limited Psychologist in the state of Michigan (LLP). Prior to starting my own practice, I have served clients in community mental health and private group practice settings. My background also includes earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology Honors from Wayne State University, and I've completed several additional trainings in the field of psychology to allow me to serve my clients in a number of ways. I consider myself to be a life-long learner, and I love learning new techniques and strategies for helping my clients. I am trained and have experience providing services to individuals facing a variety of different issues and concerns including, but not limited to: anxiety disorders; depressive and bipolar disorders; personality and attachment disorders, addiction issues; adjustment disorders; and individual treatment of relationship issues. I also have a particular interest in working with clients who struggle with perfectionism and feelings of shame or defectiveness. Most recently, I completed my Level 1 Training in Internal Family Systems (IFS) through the IFS Institute, and this has helped to shape my framework for working with clients. I currently provide therapy services for clients ages 18 and up via Telehealth or in-office at my Plymouth location.

My Role as a Therapist

I think the most important aspect of my role as a therapist is to be a teacher and a guide. I guide my clients through the change process rather than telling them exactly what to do or how to do it. I believe that it's crucial that those I work with have a sense of ownership over the decisions they make so that change can be long-lasting and not dependent on them remaining in therapy.

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

The decision to ask for help and guidance is an incredibly courageous one. Every single act of courage requires some level of vulnerability. Vulnerability, however, is not weakness- It's risk. Risk of judgment, or shame, or rejection, or abandonment. And yet; it's also (in my view) the only pathway to intimacy, connection, and a true sense of belonging. I welcome the challenge of earning my clients' vulnerability and helping them to see their own emotional courage and strength.
