My Approach to Therapy

Hi there! I am Nathaniel "Nate" Alexander, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner (LSATP), and Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) for the state of Virginia, and I am here to help you become a better or even best version of yourself. If a person uses sound common sense, their decision-making efforts improve, and so do opportunities for better outcomes in their life. After graduating from the College of William & Mary, I have had extensive education with training in several modalities. I am a firm believer in something that I call "the 3 C's": Choice, Common Sense, and Consequences. With over 25 plus years of experience, I have worked in several outpatient substance use and mental health programs, including inpatient, residential and outpatient services. I am very excited to help those who desire change via virtual therapy. Although having vast experience with a variety of different clientele, I enjoy working with clients over the age of 18 who are looking at life transitioning, relationship issues, mental health, and substance abuse issues. I am well versed in Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy. Other approaches that I have obtained and used over the last several years include Couple Therapy and Trauma-Informed Care. I am always interested in learning new approaches to meeting client needs. The beginning is a bit extensive, but I will give credit to my grandfather, my hero, and mentor. If you join, I can definitely share more. My approach and passion are CBT. The hope is to break down walls and barriers for clients to get the care they need in the most accessible ways possible. I value adapting to clients' changing needs and have the desire to empower, encourage, and educate clients to recognize their strengths amidst their life situations. The hope is to help others towards their transition into a sense of efficacy and fulfillment. As I always say, I am informal but also actively curious about why a person comes to counseling but also what they hope to gain and learn about themselves in the hopes of improving their lives for the better.
