My Approach to Therapy

I specialize in working with children and adults who are experiencing life changes, often as the result of a trauma. I support clients in their desire to live according to their own values and beliefs, and to bridge the gaps between where they are now and where they want to be through the choices they make. I believe that we all do the best we know how to manage life and that sometimes circumstances put us in places we never meant to be. We find the familiar ways of handling adversity no longer work, and perhaps we recognize that, although they have gotten us through until now, they may not have not really worked to our advantage in the past. Therapy can help by working with you to identify what has worked and what hasn't and the reasons. By focusing on your strengths and options, therapy helps you explore your options and learn the skills to make intentional choices about your life to create new, more satisfying outcomes. People think of trauma as 9/11 or mass murders. Those are, without a doubt, traumatic. Still, there are traumas in everyday life. Trauma is defined as an emotional wound or shock that creates substantial, lasting damage to psychological functioning. It happens when a child is molested; when someone is raped; when you walk in to find your spouse viewing pornography on the internet; when someone you love has an affair; when you realize your child's behavior is out of control. Trauma happens when you, or your children, are being physically, emotionally, sexually, or verbally abused. Having a sociopath or psychopath on your life is traumatic. People experience trauma with the loss of a loved one, with a serious diagnosis, with a separation or divorce. Human beings are traumatized when something happens that changes the course of life. Over the years I have had the privilege of walking beside people experiencing trauma in their lives as they uncover their strengths and use them to rediscover who they were meant to be. When we walk through a trauma and come out on the other side we really know that being whole is greater than the sum of our parts, more than the total of our past mistakes; being whole allows us to move beyond problems that have been created.
