My Approach to Helping

My name is Emily, I'm a Licensed clinical social worker with over 10 years of experience working with families and individuals. My educational background began in social work with a Master's in Social Work from the University of Georgia. With a foundation in social work, my training is focused on helping individuals reach their full potential as they define it. We are all unique and have our own unique paths to follow, I strive to meet people where they are and join them to provide support along the journey. I believe the source of healing comes from within the person. The therapist's role is to provide a safe space for the person to openly process their truth and give structure as needed. My approach is grounded in Person-Centered: empathic understanding, being our authentic selves, and nonjudgmental acceptance. As tools are needed to help us move forward I utilize a variety of modalities based on the best fit for the individual including, CBT, DBT, Strength Based, Positive Psychology, Family Systems, and Grief work.

Working through the many life changes we face in our lifetime can be overwhelming triggering anxiety, depression, and feeling unable to cope with the stress. Leaving home for the first time, starting a new career, getting married, becoming a parent, facing divorce, losing a loved one, and becoming a caregiver for someone we love are just a few of the transitions we may face on our journey. Role changes are difficult and having support as we go through them can help us thrive and grow through each challenge we face. I believe the client is the expert on themselves and I learn the most from listening with a nonjudgmental ear and asking clarifying questions when needed. They should feel relaxed and comfortable with the therapist, talking as two close friends who feel accepted and respected. My original goal was social work so that I could serve others in a practical way. Through education and practical experience, I realized much of human suffering is based on the inner struggle they are battling. The purest way to support anyone is to join them in the search for their own inner strength.

When a client is able to openly share their inner struggle and see themselves in a positive light. The client has the ability to face each day with the confidence they have the strength within themselves for what the day may bring. I review what to expect in therapy along with the limitation of confidentially. I encourage clients to share their stories and what brings them to therapy. History is gathered in a conversational style to help establish rapport.
