What's My Approach to Therapy?

You know something needs to change, but you are not sure where to start. The anxiety has become a daily weight. The trauma you thought time would heal still surfaces in ways you did not expect, in your relationships, your sleep, your ability to feel like yourself. The strategies you have relied on, staying busy, pushing through, trying to manage it alone, are running out of steam. And the idea of sitting in a therapist's office rehashing the same surface-level conversations does not exactly inspire confidence. I get it. That is exactly why I built my practice the way I did. I am Dr. Ashvind Adkins Singh, a licensed clinical psychologist with over 15 years of experience and doctoral training in both neuropsychology and psychopharmacology. What that means in plain terms: I understand how your brain, your nervous system, and your life history all interact to create the patterns that keep you stuck. I do not just help you "cope." I help you understand the machinery behind your distress so you can actually change it. My clinical work sits at the intersection of three areas that most therapists treat separately: evidence-based psychotherapy, mindfulness practices backed by decades of my own published research, and deep experiential work that goes beyond traditional talk therapy. I developed the THRIVE Model, a structured treatment framework for trauma recovery that helps clients move from surviving to genuinely thriving. It is built on clinical science, grounded in how the brain actually processes and stores traumatic experience, and designed to create lasting change rather than temporary relief. Many of my clients come to me because they want therapy that goes deeper than coping strategies. They are people who are ready to actually understand what is driving their anxiety, their trauma responses, or their sense of being stuck, and they want a therapist who can explain the "why" behind what they are experiencing. I bring the rigor of a researcher (77+ peer-reviewed publications), the perspective of an international advisor, and the presence of a clinician who has worked in settings ranging from state hospitals to private practice. For clients interested in psychedelic-assisted approaches, I also offer specialized integration support informed by both clinical training and published research. I specialize in anxiety, trauma and PTSD, depression, and the kind of emotional exhaustion that builds up when life demands more than your current tools can handle. My approach draws from cognitive-behavioral methods, mindfulness-based interventions, neuropsychological assessment, and integrative frameworks. I also offer services via telehealth across 27+ states through PSYPACT, in addition to in-person sessions in California and Virginia. My clients often tell me that working together feels different from past therapy. It is direct, collaborative, and grounded in science without feeling cold or clinical. I take the time to understand not just what you are feeling but why your brain is producing those feelings, and then we work together to shift the underlying patterns. If you are ready for therapy that actually matches the way you think, I would welcome the chance to talk. Reach out today to schedule a consultation.

My Practice & Services

AHWI Psychology Group is a private practice with offices in California and Virginia, with telehealth available across 27+ states through PSYPACT. I work with adults individually and with couples. My practice is built around the THRIVE Model, a structured treatment framework I developed for trauma recovery. It draws from cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness-based approaches (backed by my own decades of published research), and internal family systems work. Rather than following a single textbook approach, I match the method to the person and the problem, and I make sure you understand why we are doing what we are doing at every step. I also offer psychedelic integration support for clients who are working with ketamine, psilocybin, or microdosing protocols and want a clinician with both the clinical training and the research background to guide that process. I am currently developing group programs and workshops focused on trauma recovery and mindfulness. If you are interested in those offerings as they become available, reach out and I will keep you informed.

My Therapy Focus

I focus on anxiety, trauma and PTSD, depression, and the kind of emotional exhaustion that comes from carrying more than your current tools can handle. But what really defines my work is the approach, not just the diagnosis. I developed the THRIVE Model, a structured treatment framework for trauma recovery that combines clinical science, mindfulness, and experiential healing. It is designed to help people move past surface-level coping and into real, lasting change. Every session has a purpose, and I make sure you understand the reasoning behind what we are doing. I also draw from over two decades of my own published research on mindfulness, which means the practices I bring into our work are not borrowed from a weekend workshop. They are grounded in science I have personally contributed to. My goal is not to make therapy a permanent part of your life. It is to give you what you need so you do not need me anymore.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

Most people who find my profile have been thinking about therapy for a while. Maybe months, maybe years. Something keeps stopping you. It might be the sense that your problems are not "bad enough" to justify it, or the worry that you will spend weeks talking about your feelings without anything actually changing. Both of those concerns make complete sense, and neither one means therapy is not for you. Here is what I would say: you do not need to be in crisis to benefit from working with someone who understands how your brain processes stress, anxiety, and trauma. Therapy with me is not open-ended venting. It is structured, collaborative, and focused on giving you a clear understanding of why you feel the way you do and what to do about it. If after a first conversation you decide it is not the right fit, that is completely fine. But the conversation itself costs you nothing except a little time.

Had a Negative Therapy Experience?

If you have been in therapy before and it did not work, that does not mean therapy does not work for you. It usually means the approach was not the right match. A lot of people come to me after spending months or even years in treatment that stayed on the surface: learning coping techniques, practicing breathing exercises, and talking in circles without ever understanding the root of what was happening. I work differently. My training in neuropsychology and psychopharmacology means I can explain what is actually going on in your brain and body when anxiety or trauma shows up. That clarity alone changes the experience for most of my clients. You stop feeling like something is wrong with you and start seeing patterns you can actually change. If your past therapist gave you tools without context, I bring the context. And if you felt like your last therapist did not challenge you enough, that will not be a problem here.
