My Approach to Therapy

If you're reading this, you've probably been carrying something heavy for a while. Maybe you're exhausted from fighting your own body, your own mind, or just the weight of trying to keep it all together. Maybe you've tried to ask for help before, and it didn't quite fit. Or maybe this is the first time you've let yourself look. Whatever brought you here, I'm really glad you are. I'm Alicia, Owner and Therapist at Birch Grove Collaborative, and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Iowa. I believe you deserve support that actually feels like support. Not a one-size-fits-all approach, not judgment, and definitely not being handed a meal plan or a list of coping skills and sent on your way. I founded BGC because I wanted to build a place where people like you could actually feel safe. I work with people who are navigating eating-related challenges, body image struggles, trauma, anxiety, depression, and attention-deficit hyperactivity (ADHD), and I bring genuine care into every single session. My approach is collaborative and relational. I'll follow your lead and meet you where you are, while also gently challenging you when it's time to grow. I draw from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), internal family systems (IFS), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and trauma healing approaches. Not because I'm checking boxes, but because I believe healing happens in different ways for different people, and I want to find what actually works for you. You'll find that my space is weight-inclusive, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and neurodivergent-friendly. I mean that. All of you is welcome here. If something here resonates, reach out. You don't have to have it all figured out to take the first step.

My Practice & Services

Birch Grove Collaborative is a group practice built on the belief that everyone deserves access to care that is affirming, inclusive, and genuinely individualized. Our clinicians share a deep commitment to creating spaces where clients feel seen, respected, and supported from the very first session. We are a fully virtual practice, which means we can reach people across multiple states without anyone having to fight traffic or sit in a waiting room. We are currently licensed in Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Colorado, Texas, South Carolina, and Georgia, and we are always growing. In addition to individual therapy, we offer medication management services in Iowa for clients who want an integrated approach to their mental health care. We believe in collaborative, whole-person treatment, and when appropriate, we work closely between our therapy and medication management services to make sure nothing falls through the cracks. We accept several insurance plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Aetna, Iowa Medicaid, and Nebraska Medicaid. We are happy to discuss your coverage and answer any questions about cost before you ever commit to anything. Our team specializes in eating disorders, trauma and EMDR, ADHD and autism, anxiety, depression, and body image. Every clinician at BGC is weight-inclusive, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and neurodivergent friendly. These are not just words on a website. They shape how we show up for every single client, every single day. If you have questions about whether BGC is the right fit, please reach out. We are always happy to talk.

Groups I Work With

I work primarily with adults and adolescents who are navigating eating disorders of all presentations, body image struggles, trauma, anxiety, depression, and ADHD. I have a special passion for supporting the LGBTQIA+ community, neurodivergent individuals, and people who have felt unseen or judged in medical and therapeutic spaces. My practice is weight-inclusive, and I warmly welcome anyone who has been told they don't quite fit somewhere else.
