I approach my practice with compassion, empathy, and nonjudgmental understanding.
I want my clients to feel comfortable talking with me about their struggles. I provide empathy and exploratory questions to develop a shared understanding of their struggles and goals for therapy.
David Sternberg, LICSW, has been a practicing psychotherapist in Washington, D.C., since 2002. He specializes in treating young adults (20s and 30s), who are experiencing anxiety, depression and stress related to major life transitions. At DC Talk Therapy, all 10 of our therapists specialize in working with young adults (20s and 30s) with anxiety, depression and relationship problems. In our practice, we have a substance abuse specialist, an OCD specialist and a therapist who works with the LGBTQ community. Since we opened our practice in Washington, D.C., in 2012, we've helped nearly 2,000 people live happier and more fulfilling lives. Our therapists use a variety of therapeutic approaches but primarily use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT focuses on modifying maladaptive or distorted thoughts about ourselves or the rest of the world as a way to change resulting feelings and behavior. Our therapists believe that psychotherapy can be tremendously rewarding, even life-changing. We see therapy as very much a collaborative process, so we ask clients for feedback throughout the process. We want the client's experience to be as valuable as possible. Our office staff answers the phone live Monday through Friday 9 am-5 pm and they can often schedule you an appointment within 2-3 business days.
I strongly believe in your inherent ability to grow and change-- to survive neglect, hardship, and trauma and become stronger and more resilient. I help people find their strengths and learn to accept and even love their vulnerabilities. I teach coping skills and I listen intently.
From years of experience, I can help my clients see what they cannot see. Light bulbs go off and clients open up to new possibilities, self discovery, and hope. I use both short term and longer term psychotherapy in order to provide more choice for my clients. I see children and adults up to age 85. I do therapy with parents and children, adolescents, individuals with depression or anxiety, and especially people going through stressful transitions. I focus on good relationships within families and within individuals (ie. How we relate to ourselves). When someone comes to see me they can expect that I will listen deeply to what they say and feel, to what they want to work on, and then work together to find solutions. I currently offer telemental health services only. I prefer phone, but Zoom and Facetime are optional.

I believe that the innate nature of human beings is to survive and be well, and that varying degrees of life experience and trauma create psychic structures that inhibit that natural process from occurring. My job is to help client's develop compassionate awareness for these structures that are no longer functional in their lives and help them to build tolerance for the underlying feelings being protected by these structures. And ultimately to help client's choose and develop healthier more functional thoughts, feelings and behaviors to expand their well being, life satisfaction and treat themselves with loving kindness.
Your struggles are unique and complex. As a psychologist my aim is to help you explore your personal narratives, to understand how your past is affecting your present and keeping you from fulfilling your values. Whether you are experiencing difficulty with relationships, life events, healing from trauma, or simply don't find yourself enjoying your life as you once did, I will help you feel grounded while we gain a non-judgmental perspective on your struggles and put our minds together to strategize ways forward. I specialize in treatments for trauma, depression, anxiety, job stress, and relationship issues. I take a pragmatic and eclectic approach by integrating psychodynamic theories with evidence-based tools. I draw on treatments ranging from CBT, ACT, and CPT, tailoring treatment to your unique needs and experiences. I completed advanced training at Haverford College and the Dept. of Veteran Affairs Hospital where I continue to work as a trauma specialist. Finding a therapist you click with can be a daunting task but is a key part of healing. In therapy, I am open, creative, and curious. If my approach sounds right for you or if you’d like to learn more, please do not hesitate to reach out or visit my site to schedule an appointment for a free consultation. Hey there, I'm Chris. You've spent years being the person everyone else counts on — the one who holds it together, figures it out, and keeps going even when you're running on empty. You're not failing. You're burned out. And there's a real difference between the two. I work with high-achieving adults who are tired of white-knuckling their way through life. The ones who have tried therapy before and left feeling like they got a worksheet instead of actual change. The ones who are self-aware enough to know exactly what's wrong but can't seem to stop doing it anyway. My approach isn't textbook. I don't do the head-nodding, "how-does-that-make-you-feel" thing. I notice what you're doing in the room and I say something about it. We get into the actual patterns — the overgiving, the resentment you've been swallowing, the version of yourself you keep promising you'll get back. That's where the real work happens. You've been holding it together long enough. Let's talk.
