I am a psychoanalyst, graduate of the Training and Research Institute of Self Psychology, an EMDR practitioner, and a sandplay therapist trained through the Sandplay Therapists of America, which has a Jungian foundation. My experience with children and families as a consultant for high schools, elementary schools, preschools and clinics has shaped my ability to work intuitively and spontaneously in a wide variety of circumstances. My experience as a professional artist and my meditation practice also greatly inform my work. My partner, William Murray, PhD, and I have formed Keene Murray Therapy and have an office across from Prospect Park in Brooklyn. We also work long distance on the phone and Skype. Besides our individual work, we offer workshops, CDs and dual-therapist couples therapy. Our work at Keene Murray Therapy is: Creative shaped both by an immersion in a variety of psychological approaches and an extensive background in creative arts. Respectful We recognize that our clients are the only ones who can truly tell their story. Our function is to help clients identify and achieve their goals. Non-pathologizing We believe that most problems are simply former solutions that no longer work. We help clients discover more adaptive means to meet life's challenges. Collaborative We value the interpersonal quality of a therapeutic relationship that acknowledges the effects and influences that both client and therapist contribute. Depth-oriented Experience has shown us that significant change has its roots in the multi-layered interconnectedness of a person's inner life. We accompany clients as they explore and learn to navigate this strange and exciting territory.
We all experience challenges at some point in our life. For some people, this means having to cope with traumatic events or chronic stressors. I believe a strong therapeutic relationship that is grounded in comfort and trust is essential for successful treatment. I offer a professional, judgment-free environment where you may explore your issues and past experiences. I will help you to overcome conditions such as depression and anxiety, improve dysfunctional relationships, develop a positive perspective, and regain control of your life. My integrated therapeutic approach helps clients to reduce adverse symptoms and increase resilience, insight, awareness, and personal growth. When working with children, I utilize techniques from play therapy or other age-appropriate approaches to reach treatment goals. When treating teenagers, I keep in mind their drive for independence as well as their need for continued parental support. I believe positive family involvement is vital when providing mental health services to young people. I am highly experienced in treating trauma-related issues. I also have advanced training in family therapy, play therapy, the psychology of lifespan development, sexual behavior problems in adolescence, and helping older clients find meaning and fulfillment in their life.
Welcome! I work with clients who struggle with the psychological, emotional, and physical consequences of past and or ongoing trauma, as they try to avoid repeating personal and professional mistakes that only worsen their experiences. If these challenges sound familiar, I can help you process your trauma in a supportive, validating environment, that is empowering and ultimately freeing.
Whether you and your partner are struggling due to a rupture in trust, a major life transition, or uncertainty about alignment in goals for the relationship, I help couples gain deeper clarity so they can make meaningful progress toward long-term, sustainable growth. My clients have done well for themselves in many aspects of their lives, but feel lost about how to address the frustration, disconnect, and overwhelm in their relationship that may have them repeating painful patterns. As a relationally focused therapist, I’ll help you develop better insight into those patterns, explore the underlying functions and needs driving these dynamics, and build new ways of relating that foster connection and shared meaning in your life together. You deserve expert-driven therapy that is relatable, effective, and affirming, and you’ll find it here. I offer a safe, supportive space for people of color and LGBTQ+ couples. I also offer a unique perspective and support for clients navigating long-distance relationships, decision-making around marriage andor parenthood, adoption, and protecting their own families from intergenerational patterns that have persisted in their family of origin. Finding the right therapist is so important to getting the most out of couples therapy. Reach out for a free 20-minute video consultation so we can determine whether I’m the right therapist for you. Let’s get started!
I have 22 years experience working productively with people of diverse backgrounds, ages, and sexual orientations. Our job together is to identify dysfunctional patterns that contribute to—even perpetuate—your difficulties. The main focus of therapy is to remove inner and outer obstacles that prevent you from reaching your goals and having better relationships. My approach is supportive, empathetic and, above all, pragmatic. While understanding the past is essential, change can only occur in the present. I will challenge you to be an active partner in therapy and to work toward ongoing insight, growth, and positive change both in and outside of sessions. My experience ranges from psychotherapy with adults, teens, and couples to counseling trauma survivors with acute PTSD. Whether you seek to make a major change, overcome a life blow or obstacle, or to break a chronic pattern, I will meet you where you are at. Please note that after years of counseling and assessment in offices, I‘ve recently moved into a different space: video. Active listening in a safe, private setting is foundational to this work. I’ve learned that the catalytic elements of good therapy can thrive via video too.
Thank you for your interest in my practice. I have been a licensed clinical social worker in the Mid-Hudson Valley since 1994. I offer supportive psychotherapy to children, adults, couples and families in the community. Within the context of a caring therapeutic environment, I collaborate with clients on addressing a range of concerns including relationship issues, life transitions (such as going away to college, coping with divorce, becoming a first-time parent) and managing stressors at school, work and home. Capitalizing on each individual's unique strengths and needs, I assist clients in finding ways to enhance their personal effectiveness and overall life satisfaction through opportunities to develop new skills and valuable insights. I am committed to staying current in my knowledge base as a mental health clinician so that I can best serve the persons who entrust me with their psychological well-being. My post-graduate training is ongoing and includes certification in the field of Grief and Loss. Having this background, I am particularly attuned to how emotional wounds that were inflicted in the past may be making their legacy known in the present. I have also been certified by the Smith College School for Social Work in the area of Advanced Practice with Children and Adolescents. My practice is sensitive to all areas of diversity, including race, gender, religion, ethnicity, disability and sexual orientation. While I work with persons of many faiths and creeds, I do offer Christian-based counseling by request.
Paul Ammendola, LCSW - PresidentCEO The Well is my private practice as well as future counseling center and resource center. I am a dedicated, caring counselor with over 13 years experience in mental health counseling, spiritual counseling, recovery and working with the formerly incarcerated. I am passionate about seeing people go from walking in the dark to walking in the light. Changing from consistent negative thinking patterns to positive truth based thinking. There is nothing greater for me than seeing the broken and lost walking with God in harmony. I love to help, how can I help you? As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I have learned the art of integrating multiple psychotherapy models with Christian principles. I am also the Substance Abuse Director at HealthCare Choices and former Executive Director and Co-Builder of Bridges of New York. I have been a leader in New York raising the bar on counseling and recovery, bringing it to a new respected standard since 2003. I am also a member of the Nassau, Orange Queens and Kings County Reentry taskforces and have worked closely with Nassau County and the Department of Corrections at the State and County levels. I have been a business owner in multiple arenas from counseling to music. I continue to seek innovative ways to help people live free and productive lives in an intensely challenging world filled with so many different, confusing paths to choose from. Having a business background, and business education combined with finance and counseling makes for the successful driving force behind the vision of a brand new model of help at The Well. I am also a seasoned singer, musician, and songwriter, leading worship all throughout New York with the band Red Words. Our band's music continues to evolve but has a central theme that focusses mostly on honesty, transparency, hope, and healing. It is very easy to see that our message travels along very clear lines that explore many different issues coming from personal experience as well as years of helping others with counseling, spirituality, and discipleship. I will not only be there for help on your journey but continued encouragement for years to come.
