Mental Health in Asheville

Asheville and other cities in western North Carolina have a higher suicide rate than the rest of the state. The North Carolina Division of Public Health designed a suicide prevention plan in 2015. It seeks to educate residents about suicide and promote effective treatment practices. 

Access to mental health care is limited in Asheville. Roughly 16% of city residents age 65 or younger do not have health insurance. In 2016, the C3356 Comprehensive Care Center opened. It offers 24/7 support to Asheville residents who are experiencing psychiatric crises, including a mobile crisis unit which can help people stuck at home.
