Mental Health in McHenry

One of the main mental health issues being tackled by McHenry County is suicide. From 2015 to 2016, the number of suicides in McHenry County decreased from 35 to 23. However, in 2017, the number almost doubled to 43. In 2016, almost 9% of households surveyed reported suicidal thoughts.

To address the rising suicide rate, the county’s Mental Health Board has partnered with the Community Foundation for McHenry County to provide suicide prevention training. The training is offered without charge to school and public officials, mental health professionals, first responders, and anyone else who has an interest. Trainees learn how to identify people who are at risk of suicide, motivate them to seek help, and refer them to treatment services.
