I am Alimatu Mustapha- Palmer (nee Alima Palmer),PhD., NCC, LPC, MAC, CSAC, BCC. I have been in the world of behavioral health and services for the past 25 years. I am experienced and well-credentialed including several board certifications, awards, and recognitions. My experience includes conducting trainings, workshops, and assessments and working with individuals, families, groups, non-profits, local and international government agencies including DSS- CPS, law enforcement, minority populations, specific women and children issues, spirituality, cultural dynamics, marriage, divorce, life transitions, coaching and more. I advance the growth and mindfulness perspectives as I believe life is an ongoing process. You can expect to get practical skills and tools to resolve your concerns as we engage in a collaborative therapeutic partnership to address your specific needs, challenges, and goals. In that effort, I employ an individualized holistic approach to therapy by utilizing a variety of treatment modalities including, but not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Family Systems Theory, Person-Centered Therapy, Narrative/Talk therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and more
"What lies behind you and what lies in front of you pales in comparison to what lies within you" -Ralph Waldo Emerson My approach to helping you is one that incorporates examining relevant aspects of your past, discussing goals you might hold for your future, and most importantly, discussing the strength that you hold inside of you. In experiencing despair and the discomfort of vulnerability, we often lose sight of our strength and potential for growth. My goal is to assist you in learning the essential coping skills you might need in your life. I also aim to facilitate growth in the realms of mind, body, and soul. I understand the correlation between the physical and psychological aspects in life, which can sometimes become unbalanced and may create discomfort, which can even feel debilitating at times, and I want to help you make sense of some of the symptoms you may be experiencing. Contact me to restore the balance in your life and be free of the despair or dissatisfaction you may be currently experiencing.
Do you have the same fights? Does anything ever get resolved? Do you long for a simpler time when things were better between you and your partner? Do you talk only about logistics and the kids? Are you roommates and want to be lovers? Do you feel alone even though you are surrounded? Are you stuck in your relationship? I understand. I've helped numerous couples learn new skills, develop a better process for resolving differences and navigating life so that .... at minimum, you like each other at the end of the day. In my work, I include individual and couples therapy and add group therapy when the time is right. With this 360-degree view of each individual in the couple, the patient is able to see their self-defeating patterns and practice new skills in couples and groups to become a better partner. I also work with individuals in their work roles in a similar fashion.
Our own minds can multiply, confuse, and perpetuate the inevitable pain in life, or heal us to greater joy, love, and creativity. I will work with you to master your imaginative creation and to steer toward the life you choose with effective strategies. Building on your strengths and the best parts of your life, we will work together to resolve your problems and fulfill your highest dreams. Tools: I have an exciting new tool in my tool box: Accelerated Resolution Therapy. It is so new that it is not among the modalities on this website but it's been around long enough for research to validate it as "evidence based." Most soldiers with PTSD have gotten good results and have completed therapy by the 3rd session. I am so thrilled with the helpfulness of A.R.T. that I have worked to become a trainer in this method. Find out more about it online. Please see my own website (above) for a link. MindBody Health: I am fascinated by how our minds relate to our bodies and vice versa. Two areas of research demonstrate how strong the connection is. 1. Adverse Childhood Events are correlated with major health problems later in life. And 2, excessive negative stress is often followed by illness. The first can be transformed using Accelerated Resolution therapy. You have resources now that can be brought to the child who experienced trauma. The second, stress, can be relieved, in many ways to protect and care for your body. Together, perhaps we will create self-hypnotic recordings to align the power of your mind with the health of your body. Some health problems, such as allergies to pets and airborne substances, seem to respond especially well to this approach. We are only beginning to know the extent to which our minds can affect our physical health. For me, there is enough evidence to direct the powers of my mind toward healing from any illness - in addition to taking advantage of the wisdom of my doctors.
I work collaboratively with my clients to help them learn new coping skills, create positive changes, and attain the goals they have for themselves. My clients view me as supportive, nonjudgmental, and practical. I work with professionals, including MDs and attorneys, as well as stay-at-home moms and students. I specialize in helping people manage anxiety and stress, perfectionism, self-esteem issues, codependency and relationship concerns, and depression. I also support clients who are navigating in vitro fertilization (IVF) and a challenging fertility journey. I help my clients create a more balanced, meaningful, and fun life for themselves. This can include managing negative self-talk, learning to be more assertive and set boundaries, and re-evaluating self-care.
