Hello, I am Sherry aaker. I am a licensed professional counselor in the states of GA and FL. My focus is depression, anxiety, trauma, military veterans, and caretakers.
I am a licensed associate professional counselor with 2 years of experience supporting individuals navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress-related challenges. I work best with clients ready to invest in their emotional well-being, build healthier coping skills, and take steps toward lasting growth. My approach is warm, genuine, and collaborative, and I strive to create a space where you feel fully seen, heard, and supported as we work toward balance and healing together.|
I believe that creating the life we want requires intention. Counseling is the process of naming what we want and value, identifying the obstacles to creating that life, and then working to address those obstacles so that we can live life to the fullest. Obstacles come in many forms, from past trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, and so much more. I have a passion for walking side by side with my clients as they embrace both the past and present so they can step confidently into their future!
As the facilitator of the process the focus is to build trust and provide sanctuary through the course as you build healthy, deeper and more fulfilling relationships. My philosophy is that you will respond according to emotional needs that are not being met which can then effect your relationships with romantic partners, family members, friends and co-workers. Allowing you the opportunity to uncover those needs elicits feelings of safety, being heard and valued. Relationship concerns like ineffective communication, medical illness, sexual variances, depression and other mood issues are where the bulk of my experience and interests lie. The therapy process can sometimes be daunting as many are leery of old issues being surfaced; together, we can address these concerns successfully.
Painful feelings are not a sign of weakness nor, are they your fault. There is relief and, there is hope. Our first hour together is free. I do this because this time should only be for you. You should be the one to decide if you feel comfortable with us working together. Your level of comfort and openness is important to me. You should feel free to ask any questions you may have without feeling any pressure to get "something" done. In the past, most families have had the stability of living in one place with resources such as grandparents and lifelong friends. Now, we move, change jobs, and may have blended or single parent families. Our resources may no longer be there for us. Life's challenges can make us feel powerless, frustrated, depressed and isolated. These feelings can create anguish that feels tortuous, and at times unrelenting. Pushing them aside just doesn't seem to work anymore. Since these feelings are unseen, they are not easily understood. Unfortunately, we may think these feelings are a sign of weakness and we think we should be able to "just get over it." It takes strength and courage to reach out, ask for help, and commit to discovery and change. Life's challenges can cause feelings of hopelessness, sadness, and fear. Sometimes, it may seem these challenges are overwhelming. These feelings actually expose us to more illness and physical pain and also affects our judgment, decision making, and personal relationships. If you are reading this, then you are reading with hope. Hope with understanding and help, can bring you relief.
Have you found yourself constantly apologizing when you have made a misstep, or agreeing to something you do not want to do, or suddenly overcome with anxiety? Or, maybe, you rage at someone because they upset you and then feel guilty afterwards? If so, you have come to the right person. I am a therapist who believes that someone who has a past filled with abuse, neglect, or difficult circumstances has become imprisoned by their past. They have memories deeply engraved in their brains, which have caused adaptive strategies to form in order to survive and be safe. I also believe there is a way out. I can help you learn to reprogram your brain so that you are able to tell the difference between your adaptive reactions and what are thoughtful ones. Also, to find an internal sense of safety that counteracts the effects of an unsafe, unwelcoming hostile world. Thus, to be able to recognize who you really are without needing the previous, adaptive parts to be able to stay safe.
It is my passion for people and relationships that led me to this profession. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, I enjoy helping couples identify areas for improvement in their relationship and find ways to re-connect and build a healthier, more satisfying relationship. I also enjoy working with individuals searching for better ways to manage stress, anger, depression and anxiety. Assisting clients in identifying their strengths and self-worth as well as ways to adjust to life-changes and transitions (i.e. grief, job-changes, relocation, etc.) are among some of the common presenting issues I've successfully helped clients overcome. I am able to do this by meeting you where you are on your journey, using a therapeutic process that focuses on your needs and goals.
I have been practicing therapy since 2019 and hold an LPC. I typically work with couples who are facing communication challenges and broken trust along with helping them reconnect. I work with individuals and help them to gain healthy coping skills to deal with anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.
Relationships make up the core of our lives. They can be fulfilling, yet also challenging at times. When we get stuck in our relationships, it can be helpful to know that there are many options. My role is to assist you in determining where you are in your relationship; what choices are available for you; which road you want to take. Let me be your guide towards which road to travel. I am also a Divorce Coach and work as a member of the Collaborative Law team of professionals.
When conversations keep turning into conflict, silence, or distance, counseling can help you understand the cycle, not decide who wins it.
I am a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) with 25 years of experience providing compassionate and comprehensive psychiatric care to children, adolescents, and adults. I specialize in treating mood conditions, anxiety, trauma-related concerns, and behavioral challenges.
