My Approach to Therapy

I specialize in working with the African American community, BIPOC individuals, and those with LGBTQ+ or expansive identities. I recognize how the weight of systemic oppression, racism, and prejudice directly impacts our mental health, often manifesting as chronic exhaustion, anxiety, depression, or racial trauma. Maybe you remember the classic airplane safety instruction: put your own oxygen mask on first before helping others. When you are constantly navigating the pressure to conform or the stress of being misunderstood, remembering to take care of yourself feels impossible. You become so accustomed to putting others first that your own wellness gets lost. Together, we will explore the thoughts, feelings, and patterns shaping your life. I provide a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and affirming space where your personal truth is honored. Whether you are seeking individual therapy, couples counseling, or support for your teen, I will help you find the strength to put your mask on first. I invite you to reach out today to schedule an initial consultation.

My Practice & Services

I am licensed to provide telehealth and online counseling to clients residing anywhere in California (CA), Texas (TX), or Kansas (KS).

What does it mean to have a culturally responsive and identity-affirming practice?

It means you do not have to leave any part of yourself at my door. Too often, therapy forces individuals from marginalized communities, diverse backgrounds, or expansive identities to code-switch or explain away their lived experiences just to be understood. My practice is built on the belief that your cultural background, your identity, and your personal truth are not context clues. They are the very foundation of who you are. I intentionally create a space where you do not have to perform, translate your reality, or defend your existence. Whether we are exploring the heavy weight of systemic pressures or navigating your day to day personal relationships, your whole, unedited self is entirely welcome here.

What is your favorite rule to break in therapy?

The rule that says therapists have to be blank, emotionless walls who just nod and ask how that makes you feel. If something is weighing heavily on you or you have had a very difficult experience, we are going to talk about it and try to understand what is going on. But if something is funny, we are probably going to laugh about it. Humor needs to show up in the room just as much as processing deep emotions like fear, anger, or sadness. We are going to celebrate your wins, talk about the times when you fall and help you get back up, and unpack those difficult moments. While we are doing that, we will share meaningful conversation while building a strong therapeutic connection.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I am skilled at helping you look beneath the surface to understand how your early life shapes your present. Often, the care, protection, and nurturing we received growing up wasn’t quite what we needed—and over time, those unmet needs can turn into a harsh, critical inner voice. My role is to help you catch those critical thoughts in real time, partnering with you to strengthen your own internal protector so you can offer yourself the steady safety and advocacy you’ve always deserved.

What I Usually Need to Know to Help

The main thing I need to know is your truth, even if you don’t quite know how to say it yet. Whether you are navigating the heavy echo of past trauma, the exhausting loops of OCD, or intense daily anxiety, there is often a hidden pressure to 'perform' therapy correctly. You don’t have to do that here. There is no right way to do this, other than showing up with your honesty and making your best effort. Our work will happen partly in the right now, giving you practical tools to handle the thoughts and feelings showing up today, and partly in your history, exploring the roots of how these patterns began. But for this partnership to work, we have to talk. I don't read minds, and I don't offer passive quick fixes; I just need your willingness to bring your whole, unedited self into the room so we can do the heavy lifting together.

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

We are often handed a rigid blueprint for what strength is supposed to look like—one that demands we carry our weight in silence. This is especially true for men and individuals within communities of color, where survival has historically meant keeping your guard up. But choosing therapy does not mean you are broken; it means you are ready to set down a load you were never meant to carry alone. Over time, we all develop unspoken rules about who we are, how other people view us, and what the world demands of us. When those old scripts start working against you, stepping into this room isn’t an admission of weakness. It is an act of courageous reclamation.

Importance of the Client-Therapist Alliance

Research consistently shows that the client-therapist connection is the strongest predictor of whether therapy works. To me, that means my job isn’t to sit back as a detached observer—it is to listen with genuine curiosity and create a room where you can finally exhale. You remain the expert on your own life; I will partner with you in challenging old habits, offering the kind of compassionate accountability that helps you step out of what is keeping you stuck as you finally begin to set that heavy armor down.
