What's My Approach to Therapy?

I believe therapy should feel both grounding and transformative. At Hyland & Associates Counseling Services, our work is rooted in creating a space where clients feel genuinely seen, understood, and supported without judgment. When people feel emotionally safe, meaningful change becomes possible. Our team works with individuals, couples, and families navigating anxiety, depression, disconnection, life transitions, and relationship distress. Many of our clients are high-functioning and capable on the outside, yet internally feel overwhelmed, stuck, or alone. Therapy offers a place to slow down, gain insight, and move forward with clarity and intention. Our approach is grounded in evidence-based modalities, including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), which helps uncover the patterns that keep people feeling disconnected from themselves and each other. Together, we identify these cycles, understand the underlying emotions driving them, and create new ways of relating that foster trust, connection, and resilience. While each therapist on our team brings a unique style and area of expertise, we share a common philosophy: to provide thoughtful, attuned, and results-oriented care. We are compassionate and direct, offering both support and gentle challenge to help clients move out of old patterns and into more fulfilling ways of living and relating. Whether you are seeking individual growth, stronger relationships, or support through a difficult season, you do not have to navigate it alone.

My Practice & Services

Hyland & Associates Counseling Services is a group practice based in Irvine, serving individuals, couples, and families throughout South Orange County. We are committed to providing a personalized therapy experience where clients feel supported, understood, and guided toward meaningful change. We offer individual therapy, couples and marriage counseling, family therapy, and support for teens and young adults. Our services also include premarital counseling, infidelity and betrayal recovery, and focused relationship work for couples seeking deeper connection and repair. Our team of licensed and associate therapists brings a range of expertise while sharing a common, attachment-based approach grounded in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and other evidence-based practices. We collaborate to ensure thoughtful, consistent care tailored to each client’s needs. Sessions are available in person at our Irvine office and via secure telehealth throughout California. We offer flexible scheduling, including daytime, evening, and weekend appointments, to accommodate busy individuals and families. From your first contact with our practice, our goal is to make the process feel clear, supportive, and straightforward. Whether you are seeking short-term support or ongoing work, we are here to help you move toward greater clarity, connection, and emotional well-being.

What I Usually Need to Know to Help

Getting started with therapy should feel clear and straightforward. At Hyland & Associates Counseling Services, we aim to make the process as smooth and supportive as possible from the very beginning. Before your first session, you will complete secure intake forms online. These forms give you the opportunity to share your concerns, background, and what you are hoping to get out of therapy. This allows your therapist to begin understanding your situation and areas of focus prior to meeting, so your time in session can be more intentional and productive. Clients can schedule appointments directly through our website at a time that works best for them. Once your appointment is scheduled, the therapist you selected will personally reach out by phone for a brief consultation. This call is an opportunity to answer any initial questions, learn more about what you are looking for, and ensure that the therapist is a good fit for your needs. We believe the relationship between client and therapist is one of the most important factors in successful therapy. We are in-network with Aetna insurance plans. For clients with other PPO plans, we are happy to provide superbills that you can submit for potential reimbursement. If you have questions about coverage or fees, our team is here to help guide you through the process so you can focus on getting the support you need.

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

Seeking therapy does not mean something is wrong with you. It means you are willing to look honestly at your life and take responsibility for your growth. That takes courage, not weakness. Most people are taught to push through, suppress emotions, or handle everything on their own, but that approach often leads to burnout, disconnection, or repeated patterns that never fully resolve. Therapy offers a different path. It creates a space where you can slow down, reflect, and understand yourself in a deeper and more meaningful way. There is nothing flawed about having emotions, struggling in relationships, or feeling overwhelmed at times. These are part of being human. What matters is how you respond to those experiences. Choosing therapy is an active step toward healing, not a sign of failure. It means you are willing to learn new ways of coping, communicating, and relating to yourself and others. In many ways, therapy is similar to working with a coach or mentor. You are building insight, strengthening emotional resilience, and developing skills that improve your overall well-being. People who seek therapy are often highly motivated to grow and live more intentionally. Rather than avoiding difficulties, they are facing them head on. That willingness to engage with your inner world is a sign of strength, self-awareness, and a commitment to becoming the best version of yourself.
