What's My Approach to Therapy?

Are you experiencing anxiety, depression, or overwhelm due to a life tranistion? You might also feel frustrated because your typical coping strategies just aren't working. There are so many types of transitions that can be really challenging: career change or uncertainty, loss, relationship changes, divorce, becoming a parent, or a new health issue. It's pretty typical to feel anxious or shut down in these situations. You might have racing thoughts about what to do, be stuck in decision paralysis, or you might feel like you lack energy and motivation for change. And sometimes previous negative experiences or traumas get activated at these times and contribute to a feeling of stuckness. Hi, I'm Sheila, and I can help you navigate through the overwhelm and stuckness, so that you can feel more grounded, confident, and connected again. We will look at your values and priorities as we set goals for the therapy. We will also talk about how your nervous system is reacting to current stress, review coping strategies that have worked in the past, and practice new strategies that will enable you to feel calm and clear. We will talk through your challenges and stressors, and use mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy to help with some new coping strategies. I also use Internal Family Systems (IFS), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and emotional freedom technique (EFT) tapping to address internalized negative messages, stuck patterns, and previous traumas. The goal is to get at the deeper experiences that are held in your body and mind so that you feel less triggered and better able to manage the ups and downs of life. This combination of practical and deep work gets you back in touch with your true self and creates lasting change.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I am a trauma informed therapist and I'm certified in EMDR. EMDR can be used for recent traumatic events like an accident, medical trauma, sudden loss, or it can be used to help with previous trauma related to abuse or neglect. I offer weekly sessions and also EMDR intensives. Many of my clients are neurodivergent, often diagnosed in adulthood and use therapy to address what this means to them or to cope with grief related to not knowing sooner.
