My Approach to Therapy

I am passionate about learning about people and cultures. I believe that my natural desire to hear peoples stories has led me to want to become a therapist. Further, the time I spent living and working abroad and studying religions has enabled me to establish a religiously and culturally sensitive practice. In terms of mental health, I believe that we can all benefit from therapy. Our physical, emotional, and social health are all important factors which contribute to our overall well-being. Common factors that affect mental health include the loss of a loved one, a medical diagnosis, relationship and family issues, difficulty finding life-work balance, job loss or work dissatisfaction, life transitions, and past or current traumatic events. These challenges are part of living and being human. Counseling is one resource that can help you get through difficult times by processing your feelings and learning new coping tools. My experience includes providing grief therapy, supporting abuse and trauma recovery, and working with people experiencing anxiety, depression, and childhood trauma. I work with individuals, couples, and families. My goal is to help individuals, couples, and families function better, both individually and as a unit.

My Practice & Services

The treatment modalities I use include the following: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to help you understand and address the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors which may be impacting your current functioning. Followed, by teaching practical coping skills and tools for managing emotions. Sometimes current behavioral and emotional challenges can be linked to past traumas (single incident or chronic) such as medical trauma, auto accidents, domestic violence, bullying, childhood abuse and neglect, natural disasters, witnessing a violent crime, experiencing war, etc. In these situations, I offer Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) which can be used to process those traumatic memories. To learn more about EMDR, please visit EMDRI.ORG. For couples, I like to integrate techniques from the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to strengthen emotional bonds, improve conflict resolution, and foster shared meaning. As a Certified Prepare-Enrich Facilitator I also offer premarital counseling and support for married couples looking to enhance their relationship. The services I offer include the following: Individual therapy, adolescent counseling, child counseling, couples therapy, premarital counseling, and family therapy virtually in San Luis Obispo County, Santa Barbara County, Orange County and throughout California.

My View on the Nature of 'Disorders'

What I've learned through my training and experience is we as humans are both a product of biology, environment, and our internal processing system. As we grow our life's experiences help shape how we view ourselves, how we view others, how we view the world around us, and how we navigate in this world, including our relationships. Things such as early emotional injuries, traumatic experiences, ruptures with key attachment figures can influence how we view ourselves and the world, and sometimes can influence us to respond in ways that prevent us from living our best life. Through talk therapy and EMDR we can help create a new internal dialogue and new ways of engaging with others and our environment.
