My Approach to Therapy

Are you feeling stuck in painful relationship patterns, overwhelmed by anxiety, or disconnected from yourself? You may be struggling with recurring conflict, emotional distance, grief, life transitions, or the feeling that you have lost touch with who you really are. I am Patrick Purcell, Licensed Marriage and (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)), and I work with individuals and couples who want to understand themselves more deeply, heal longstanding patterns, and create more satisfying relationships. My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and informed by decades of clinical experience, attachment theory, and Jungian depth psychology. In couples therapy, I help partners move beyond blame and defensiveness toward greater understanding, emotional safety, and connection. Individual therapy may include exploring anxiety, depression, self-esteem, childhood experiences, relationship patterns, and the parts of ourselves that developed to protect us. I believe meaningful change involves more than learning new techniques. It also means understanding the deeper emotional patterns that keep us stuck, and developing a more accepting, authentic relationship with ourselves. I offer online therapy throughout California, with a free 15-minute introductory consultation. If you are considering therapy, I welcome the opportunity to talk with you about what you are experiencing and whether I may be a good fit.

Importance of the Client-Therapist Alliance

The relationship between client and therapist is one of the most important parts of successful therapy. I believe meaningful change becomes possible when people feel genuinely heard, understood, respected, and safe enough to explore the parts of themselves they may have learned to hide. My role is not to judge you or tell you who you should become. It is to help you understand yourself more deeply, recognize patterns that may no longer serve you, and discover new ways of responding to life's challenges. I bring my clinical experience, curiosity, and compassion to our work, while respecting that you are the expert on your own life. For many people, therapy is also an opportunity to experience a different kind of relationship—one in which difficult feelings can be expressed without criticism, vulnerability can be met with understanding, and disagreements or misunderstandings can be explored and repaired. These experiences can gradually strengthen the ability to create healthier relationships outside therapy. I welcome your feedback about our work together. If something I say does not feel helpful, or if you feel misunderstood, I want us to be able to talk about it. A strong therapeutic alliance is not about always agreeing; it is about building enough trust to work honestly and collaboratively. Whether you are seeking individual or couples therapy, my hope is that our relationship provides a foundation for greater self-understanding, emotional healing, and a more authentic, connected life.
