My Approach to Therapy

Are you struggling to show up in relationships, to work, at school, or with family the way that you want to? Feeling like everyday life is harder than it should be, while getting overwhelmed thinking about how to change it? Maybe you even tell yourself "I should be able to do this, what's wrong with me?" If so, you’re probably familiar with sadness, anxiety, and resentment as everyday emotions that are leaving you feeling tired, burnt out, unmotivated, stuck, or hopeless. Or maybe you're not even sure how you feel but you know something is just off... So many of us go through these thoughts and feelings at different stages of our lives, for different reasons, and it can be exhausting. However, you don’t have to deal with them by yourself. For almost 10 years I've been helping teens and adults untangle the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, that are negatively impacting their lives so that they can feel less burdened by day to day existence. I offer a combination of practical skill building, psychoeducation, and normalizing how you respond to the world around you based on your unique history. Knowing what makes you tick, will help you to feel more confident in how you navigate daily life. My approach is built upon a foundation of evidence based techniques combined with humor, creativity, and sensitivity to your needs, that can help you to make some useful changes in your life. Getting started is oftentimes the most difficult part and you’ve already made it past that first hurdle. So feel free to reach out for a free consultation or checkout my website to learn more about the work that we might be able to do together.

My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy

From the moment you are born, you develop a unique pattern of how you feel and express your emotions, and I feel that psychotherapy helps you to understand those patterns so that you don't have to fall into the same traps every time your emotions take over. I also believe that psychotherapy helps you to appreciate why those patterns developed in the first place, such as not asking for help because you're used to believing you can only depend on yourself, or constantly feeling on edge with your spouse because you never knew what version of your caregiver you might get on any given night as a child, or restricting food because it provides a sense of power and relief from numbness in an overcontrolling environment. Almost all of our behaviors can be explained from a perspective of survival which helps us to not only understand but also have more compassion for ourselves.
