My Approach to Therapy

You're the person everyone counts on, and it's starting to wear on you. Things look fine from the outside. Underneath, you're more reactive than you'd like, tired in a way rest doesn't touch, and restless even when nothing's actually wrong. If that sounds familiar, nothing's broken in you. You're just carrying something that hasn't had anywhere to go yet. I'm Mike Smukler, a licensed psychotherapist in Massachusetts with over 20 years of experience. I work with capable people navigating anxiety, anger, and the kind of change that rearranges things quietly, before you've caught up to it. My approach draws on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), shaped by something older: Taoist philosophy, which isn't about fixing you. It's about helping you find your own balance again. We won't stop at coping skills. Those matter, but they're not the whole answer. Together, we'll look at what's underneath, the patterns that were running before you'd decided anything. Over time, you start noticing them sooner. Eventually, noticing turns into choosing. If you want more than a checklist, you're in the right place. My clients want a real conversation, someone who says what he actually notices instead of just nodding along. Whatever brought you here, anxiety, anger, burnout, or a transition you haven't caught up to yet, the work moves toward the same thing: trusting yourself again. If you're ready to slow down and see things more clearly, reach out. We'll figure out together whether working together is the right fit.

My Practice & Services

This is a solo telehealth practice, so you’re working with me directly, not passed between clinicians. Sessions run Tuesday through Saturday, video only, and you book them yourself online once we’re underway. I’m in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield directly. Aetna, Carelon, and Cigna are available through Headway, which confirms your coverage before the first session. Self-pay and out-of-network are both options, too, with a superbill available for reimbursement. A limited number of reduced-fee spaces are set aside for people the full fee would put out of reach. No application, no proving anything, just say so. I don’t currently run groups or workshops. If that changes, it’ll show up here first.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I work with anxiety, anger, and emotional overwhelm, along with major life transitions like career change, divorce, or loss. I also work with professionals and creatives facing burnout, perfectionism, or a sense of disconnection that outward success hasn't fixed. Together we find the patterns keeping you stuck, build real tools for emotional regulation and clarity, and move toward lasting balance, purpose, and peace of mind.

What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist

What I love most about this work is watching people find their way back to their own strength. It's a real thing to be trusted with someone's fears, their hopes, the parts they're still figuring out, and to watch that shift over time. I'm consistently struck by how much courage it takes to face what's uncomfortable and choose to keep going anyway. Every session is a reminder that this isn't about getting it perfect, it's about presence, honesty, and the slow work of becoming more yourself. Helping people find their way back to that kind of balance is genuinely meaningful work."

Had a Negative Therapy Experience?

If a past therapy experience left you disheartened, I get why trying again feels hard. A lot of people come to me wanting something that felt more human the first time around, less clinical, less like going through the motions. My approach is warm, collaborative, and judgment free. We move at your pace, and the focus stays on real connection over quick fixes. Therapy should feel like a place you can actually be yourself. Together we rebuild that trust and find a way forward that feels genuinely yours.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

Finding the right therapist is about more than credentials, it's about finding someone you actually connect with. Fit means feeling safe, understood, and respected for who you are. Look for someone whose style matches what you need: someone who listens closely, pushes back thoughtfully when it's called for, and lets you move at a pace that actually works. Warmth and presence matter more than perfection. Real change happens when you feel free to be honest, curious, and human, that's where it actually starts."

How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist

My own struggles have taught me plenty. I know what it's like to feel lost, uncertain, out of balance, and how hard it can be to actually ask for help. That experience taught me patience, self compassion, and honesty, the same things that guide how I work with clients now. Having been on both sides of the room, I bring real empathy and a fair amount of humility into each session. I'm not here as an expert who fixes you, I'm a partner walking alongside you while you find your own strength and capacity for change.

Groups I Work With

My approach combines evidence-based psychotherapy with the philosophical depth of Taoism, helping clients move from reactivity and overwhelm toward balance, resilience, and self-awareness. That combination gives you practical tools alongside real insight, so the goal isn't just feeling better; it's living in a way that actually matches who you are. I work with: Professionals, executives, and entrepreneurs managing chronic stress, burnout, or the pressure of always being the one holding things together Creatives and people in helping professions navigating identity, purpose, or burnout of their own Adults moving through major life transitions, like career change, divorce, loss, or starting over People managing anxiety, anger, overthinking, or perfectionism who are ready for something to actually shift People drawn to mindfulness, Taoist philosophy, or a more grounded approach to personal growth My clients tend to want depth over quick fixes. They're often accomplished people ready to slow down and look honestly at patterns that stopped serving them a while ago. Therapy with me is warm, collaborative, and doesn't shy away from real conversation. If you're looking for support with anxiety, anger, or a life transition, and you want someone who brings both clinical training and a different way of thinking about change, reach out. We'll figure out together what clarity and balance actually look like for you.
