If years of feeling on guard, disconnected from people who care about you, or unable to fully settle into your own life have started to make sense as something more than a personality trait, you are not imagining it. Earlier relational experiences, especially difficult or unpredictable ones, shape how the nervous system reads safety and connection long after the events themselves have passed. I am John Burns, MSW, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and an EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) Approved Consultant at Montgomery Counseling Group in Charlotte, North Carolina. My clinical focus is complex and developmental trauma. I work with adults who are ready to understand these patterns and build something different. In session, I draw on eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems, and Ericksonian clinical hypnosis, each a different route into the same work: helping you access what has been protecting you and giving it room to soften. The EMDRIA Approved Consultant designation also qualifies me to provide formal consultation to other EMDR therapists. I offer in-person sessions in Charlotte and telehealth throughout North Carolina.
