My Approach to Helping

After working and serving in this field for many years, l, Jenny Currie (founder of Fresh Start Therapy and Wellness, LLC), have come to realize that the most powerful keys to change and healing weren't the things I learned in school. They were the things I already intuitively knew. I knew that in the relationship with my clients I had to provide genuine care, honesty, acceptance, fairness, and reliability. Theories and techniques are important and can helpful, but they just aren't the most important thing. In fact, research has confirmed what i already knew. The relationship with the therapist is by far the most important component to therapy and the most important catalyst for change. I am here to support you on your therapeutic journey and consider it a privilege to walk alongside you as you take these courageous steps forward. I will go at your pace, and I will challenge you; but I will respect where you need to go and the time you need to get there.

I began my career path as a teacher working with elementary, middle school, and high school students in both the regular education setting and the special education settings as a certified elementary teacher and intervention specialist. This experience gave me a broad understanding of varying mental and emotional needs of students and great experience for working with families. In addition, I have a special place in my heart for the emotional needs of teachers who do such valuable work in our classrooms.

After teaching for a few years, I went back and acquired a master's degree in counseling and then obtained my LPCC. Throughout my time in the mental health field, I have worked in residential treatment facilities for those struggling with addictions, acute mental illness, and eating disorders. In addition, I have extensive experience and coursework background in working with those who have experienced trauma, including PTSD. For the last six and a half years, I have been in private practice and am expanding to serve more people in need.

I utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques. I am EMDR trained and implement approaches such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical-Behavior Therapy. First and foremost, I determine what would be most helpful for the client and tailor those techniques to him or her.

I would be honored to work through these challenges with you.

More Info About My Practice

Currently, I am offering both telehealth and in-person sessions. I offer a relaxed, yet professional, atmosphere where I invite the client to feel free to be themselves. As clients bring their experience with the issue and as I bring my knowledge and expertise, I believe we can put the pieces together to bring understanding, joy, and fulfillment to life and relationships.

What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist

How can I possibly choose just one thing? I love when somebody can finally put the pieces together and have that "ah ha" moment. Their eyes light up and tears may stream down their faces, the peace they have been searching for finally floods their souls, and the weighty chains that have held them down are finally broken. As someone who has experienced her own share of pain and who is still in the process of peeling back her own layers, I know the value of having someone walk with me and guide me to insights that give meaning to those painful places. I know the value of having someone understand and validate me. I also respect the value of having someone challenge me. I throughly enjoy doing this for my clients as well! We laugh, we cry, we get righteously angry, and we become our more authentic selves at each turn. I learn from my clients, and they learn from me. These are just some of the things I love about being a psychotherapist.
