My Approach to Therapy

I think about change differently than most therapists. Understanding why you do something and actually shifting it are two completely different operations. Most people who come in already have the insight — they can name the pattern, trace it back, explain it clearly. And they're still stuck. That's because the work has to happen at a level below the narrative. Not just what you think about your situation, but what your nervous system does with it. That's where I focus. I'm direct in the room. I'll name what I see. If you're avoiding the real conversation by having a more comfortable one, I'm going to point that out — respectfully, but clearly. The sessions where something actually moves are the ones where something gets a little destabilized first. I work with the full picture — not just the presenting problem, but the patterns underneath it that keep showing up across relationships, work, and self-perception.

My Practice & Services

Miller Counseling is a small, private-pay practice in Cornelius, NC — near Lake Norman and Birkdale Village. I keep a limited caseload on purpose. Not as a marketing angle — because I've thought carefully about the kind of work I want to do, and this is what I keep coming back to. No insurance. No diagnosis required to start. No treatment plans written for a reviewer instead of for you. I'm a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist — one of the few LCAS-credentialed therapists in the Lake Norman area. That dual credential matters when substance use and mental health are showing up together, which they often do. Sessions are $260. A free 15-minute consultation is available — you pick the time, I'll be there. No forms, no waiting to hear back. In-person in Cornelius, NC. Telehealth anywhere in North Carolina.

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

Because the things that are driving your behavior — the patterns, the reactions, the distance you keep — don't care whether you're tough enough to handle them. They just keep running. Therapy isn't about being broken. It's about being honest about what's not working and doing something about it. Most of the men I work with waited too long. Not because they were weak — because nobody ever gave them a reason to think this would actually be different.
