My Approach to Therapy

Most of my clients struggle to regulate their emotions and deal with that in a variety of ways. Some drink too much or overuse other substances. Some engage in compulsive behaviors involving sex or money. Some alienate others with anger or avoidance. Most engage in more than one of the above, and most have tried to stop. These are not “defects of character.” They are behaviors, and they can be changed. If the things you do to get through life are making life harder, if you are doing everything you can to escape shame or trauma or moral injury, I'd like to help you build a life you don't want to escape from. I use evidence-based modalities, particularly dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and the Gottman Method for relationships. I work extensively with trauma, using eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), and applied DBT for trauma. I am always learning, so if what we’re doing isn’t working, I’m ready to pivot.

My Practice & Services

FAQ: Do you offer virtual sessions? I do. It's nice to be in office, but others find it more comfortable or convenient to do therapy from home. While each has its advantages, what matters is that we show up. How long does therapy usually last? That depends on the individualcouple, therapeutic goals, and modality. Discernment counseling can last 1-5 sessions, pre-marital can last 8-10, 24 to get through DBT or Gottman, and deep trauma or psychodynamic work often takes even longer. I approach the duration of treatment very intentionally and we reevaluate at regular intervals because our time is valuable. Evidence also shows that meeting weekly is substantially more effective than biweekly or monthly sessions, so I ask that most of my clients commit to weekly sessions in the first phase of treatment. How can someone know if you are the right fit? I take my clients' lives seriously and my practice reflects that. The work I do with clients can't be Instagrammed. Candidly, if you are looking for chit-chat or aimless affirmation, I'm not a good fit. If you are looking for someone who will support you through suffering with compassion, never judge or shame you, never be shocked by what you bring to session, think deeply with and about you, and challenge you because you know that's what it takes to get better, we might work well together.

Groups I Work With

I got into this work because I believe that recovery from addictions and compulsive behaviors, trauma, and relationship dysfunction can happen in many different ways. I support clients through 12-step work, and I work with those for whom 12-step approaches don't fit or aren't sufficient. I support clients through adjunct therapies (EMDR, DBT skills coaching, discernment) if the therapy they are already in remains valuable. In my experience, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) can target addictive and compulsive behaviors and profoundly change how we experience our lives. When those behaviors complicate or jeopardize relationships, I help couples move through the confusion and pain using the Gottman Method, as well as DBT for Couples. For many of us, trauma is at the core of our suffering, and I use eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy TF-cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and applied DBT for Trauma to address what may lie at the root of pain andor self-destructive patterns.
