My Approach to Therapy

My name is Erik Johnston. I work with people who are pulled toward exploring the deeper patterns, images, sensations, and meanings that shape their lives. Please check out my website as it has much higher quality information as well as important differences between counseling and therapy traditions. I practice in north Overland Park, Kansas, serving the greater Kansas City metro area along Shawnee Mission Parkway. My work delves into the inside world: feelings, thoughts, intuitions, and personal history. I use the relationship itself, body awareness, imagination, dreams, sand tray, and creative approaches to turn history and stuck places into resources for real growth and new ways of being — in relationships, work, and your sense of purpose. Client's give me feedback that I am a deep and flexible therapist. They remark I am able to bring newness into their lives. They say that I, "get them" and that I support them from within their background and beliefs. I am direct, collaborative, and stay with what matters to you rather than imposing a map." I am not an "armchair" therapist - I am with you.

My Practice & Services

I find that play, imagination, and the depth of human experience are essential to growth with clients. I believe you are the best person in your life to find what you need most. And yet, I believe deeply in education and learning. Working with me, you will be offered the opportunity to grow and to learn. Check out my website and About Me to find out how I engage and learn so that I can be the best resource I can for the work you want to do.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I am specifically skilled at working through an experience and coming to an articulation of its meaning; either through diagrams, images, words, or intuitive recognition. You ARE trustworthy and can find the ability to be the most reliable person in your life. My skill and goal is to help you navigate yourself or relationship with clarity and confidence.

My Therapy Focus

My focus in therapy is relationship. This includes the client-therapist relationship, how you relate to yourself, and how you relate to others. The way you work with yourself and others is at the root of who you are and what is possible. A marked difference in my approach to relationship as therapy is my belief that strengthening a relationship will in itself resolve many of the unwanted patterns and difficulties in your life. In this way I seek to secure the relationship so that safe independence and secure boundaries can be found. This is as true with a family or couple, as it is between you and your thoughts, emotions, and even your dreams.

Groups I Work With

Because I have engaged client-led therapy for over a decade my skills center on not being the expert of your life. Understanding is not something we are born having, we come into it. This learning of each other through the therapeutic process is the first and most valuable aspects therapy has to offer. It is learning newly about each other that allows for the nuances of self to emerge and allows for true configuration of resources to be adapted to your life. In short, I believe it is in difference we learn to trust, find nuance and to find more is possible than we ever thought. The world is becoming siloed, therapy can and with me is still an honest encounter.
