My Approach to Therapy
You're not fighting all the time. You might not even be fighting at all. But somewhere along the way, you stopped really reaching each other — and now there's a quiet distance between you that neither of you knows how to close. The job is always there, even when it isn't. You've learned to read the mood at the door, to give space, to not push. And your partner has learned to keep it contained, to protect you from what they carry, to function. You're both trying. But trying isn't the same as connected.
I'm Carol Crawley, a licensed marriage and family therapist with over ten years of experience working with first responder families — officers, spouses, and the relationships that hold it all together under extraordinary pressure.
I bring something to this work that clinical training alone can't give you: I'm a law enforcement spouse. I've lived the shift work, the hypervigilance, the way the job changes a person over time, and the particular loneliness of loving someone who has been trained to compartmentalize everything. You won't need to translate your experience for me. I already know the language.
My approach is trauma-informed and attachment-focused, which means I'm interested in more than surface behaviors. I want to understand what got set in motion — in both of you — and why the patterns that kept you safe are now keeping you apart. I work with individuals and couples, and I move at a pace that respects how hard it is to let your guard down, especially when your guard has kept you functional for years.
This work isn't about fixing your partner or fixing yourself. It's about understanding what happened to the connection — and doing the slow, honest work of rebuilding it.
If you're a first responder or someone who loves one, and you're tired of the distance feeling like the new normal, I'd be glad to talk.
I'm licensed in California and Tennessee and offer virtual sessions.
