I work with clients who are navigating the impact of past trauma, experiencing suicidal thoughts, or engaging in self-harming behaviors. My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and grounded in meeting you where you are in your healing journey. Using a combination of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), narrative therapy, and person-centered approaches, I help clients explore their experiences at a pace that feels safe and manageable, build readiness for trauma-focused work, and move toward healing and greater self-understanding. TELE HEALTH Life can simply work better at times with some help. Psychotherapy is an effective tool, both to resolve deep seated difficulties rooted in the past and to make headway with the more immediate issues in our present day lives. It can help relieve anxiety, depression and stress and can help you with relationships with family, at work and in a more general way. My approach is interactive, using a psychoanalytic context to understand current difficulties. While clients want to better deal with long-standing issues rooted in the past, they also want present - oriented help resolving these troubles.
I work with my clients in two complementary ways: skilled EMDR to target trauma-related distress, and explorative relational talk therapy that utilizes psychoanalytic and existential theories to better understand repeating patterns, attachment, identity, and life direction concerns. My work with you can be done with either an EMDR-focused start, relational-focused work, or both as your needs evolve. I enjoy working with adults (18+) who are aiming for both lasting relief and a deeper understanding of who they are and what they want out of life.
I welcome your courage in sharing your challenges with me and believe that we can work together using evidence-based therapy to create change. Our relationship matters to me and I will check in with you frequently about our work. I bring respect, empathy, humor, and authenticity (I'm a real person!) to the therapy room. I often work with body image and eating issues (e.g., food restrictionother), addiction, anxiety & OCD, insomnia, depression, trauma & PTSD, shame, perfectionism, relationship issues and parenting. I am a certified couples' and Level 2 AEDP and IFS therapist. I also use mindfulness, CBT and DBT heavily in my practice. I draw on evolutionary psychology to understand how our feelings (e.g., anxiety, fear, anger, joy) evolved to protect us and push us to take survival-oriented actions that we may or may not want to take. I use mindfulness to help us gain awareness of feelings and make new choices when needed. I am part-time faculty at Harvard Medical School, where I trained. I often work with adult professionals as well as adolescents and young adults. I enjoy meditating and spending time in nature — rock-climbing, hiking and cycling. I grew up in Europe in a diverse family and bring a multicultural sensitivity to therapy. I conduct therapy in French and Spanish as well, languages I am fluent in. https:www.dremilymanove.com
